Coming up this month:
Oct: NHL season begins 10/7, F1: COTA on 10/19, GYM World Championships 10/19-25, NBA season begins 10/21, World Series 10/21
Baseball – MLB:
- Wild Card games: 3 of the 4 series went to a winner-take-all game 3.
- The Tigers had some great pitching by Skubal who recorded 14 Ks to lead them to a day 1 W 2-1. Game 2 was tied 1-1 until the 8th inning when the Guardians went off, putting up 5 runs to win game 2 6-1. The Tigers would score first in game 3 but CLE answered in the next inning. But the Tigers would get a rally going in the 7th scoring 4 and although the Guardians came back slightly, they would fall 3 runs short. DET moves on.
- The Cubs hit back to back HRs in the 5th to win a close game 1 by 2 runs. The Padres would hold the Cubs scoreless the next day though to tie up the series 3-0. The Cubs tallied up 13 hits in Game 3 to only score 3 runs. Not a good stat but it was good enough. Padres only managed 1 run in the 9th and would go home.
- The Red Sox trailed all game until the 7th when they put up 2 runs and another in the 9th for good measure. BOS also won game 1 3-1. The Yankees would score first again in game 2 with 2 runs in the 1st. BOS would tie it up in the 3rd. Yankees would get 1 in the 5th. Red Sox answer with 1 in the 6th and it looked like we might go back and forth all game. But the Yankees would get another in the 8th but the Red Sox would not score in the 9th and we head to game 3. The Yankees wouldn’t mess around in Game 3. They kept the Red Sox off the board completely with 12 Ks and win 4-0 and advance.
- The Dodgers went OFF in game 1, scoring 10 including Ohtani and Hernandez who had 2 each. While all the other games on day 1 were low scoring and close. This one was not. LA doubles Reds 5 runs to take game 1. Game 2 was the same story! Dodgers doubled the amount of runs by the Reds 8-4 and become the first team to advance.
- First round:
- The Brewers beat up on the Cubs in game 1, winning 9-3.
- But the worst start has to go to the Yankees who would fall 1-10 to the Blue Jays. It wasn’t much better in Game 2. The Blue Jays had 15 hits for 13 runs while NY had 10 hits for 7 runs.
- The Dodgers were the first to advance and then used that momentum to beat the Phillies 5-3 in game 1.
- The closest game was the Tigers/Mariners game. Raleigh would not get a HR in this one but his team could’ve used it. it was 2-2 went we went to extra innings. We wouldn’t have another score til the 11th when the Tigers got a rally going to put one up and take Game 1. The Mariners would rally in Game 2, holding the Tigers to just a 2-run 8th Polanco HR’d twice so really he tied it up alone and then a final run in the 8th would put them away. Series tied.
Football – NCAAF:
- There were 5 losses in the top 25 this week and two were on Friday so were actually going to start with those.
- Wtf happened here. UCLA put up 27 points in the 1H against 7 Penn st who must’ve still be licking their wounds after last week. UCLA took advantage of Their sloppiness and despite the Nittany lions coming to within 5 that’s another loss for Penn st 42-37. UCLA was a 24.5 point underdog and was 0-4.
- There’s no other way to say this. Florida beat 9 Texas. Texas did not look good all day. The gators who were 1-3 shutdown Arch Manning and cut through the Oline. They took the lead early leading 19-7 at half and Every time Texas scored, Florida had an answer. Florida true freshman Wilson showed out! Arch threw 2 int (almost 3 but the ball hit the ground).
- Cinci went up 17-0 early and they would never trail. 14 Iowa state would bring it close but failed to get onside kick with their 3rd string kicker. This is the highest ranked win at home for satterfeield and the bearcats since 2006.
- 16 Vandy and 10 Alabama. Vandy would score first but it went back and forth. But unlike last year bamas qb Ty Simpson handled business and pulled away a bit in the 2H. Vandy had 2 turnovers inside the 15 yard line. Final here 30-14 bama gets revenge.
- Going back to the state of Florida. 18 Florida St hosted 3 Miami. Florida state threw the ball 45xs. Score was not indicative of how this game went. Miami was in control after their first TD in the game. Yes fsu got it close but it wasn’t ever in jeopardy. Miami wins 28-22 state champs!
- Other headlines from around the football universe:
- Purdue is 0-11 in their games within 7 days of a Taylor swift album being released. They lost to Illinois this weekend 43-27.
- UNC got destroyed by Clemson. Clemson won 38-10 but man it was even uglier than that score indicates.
- Uva got 2 defensive TDs and beat Louisville in OT.
- Baylor was trailing 31-17 in the 4Q before coming all the way back to win by 1 with a pick 6 and a 53 yard FG to seal it. K St did not have a good day.
Football – NFL:
- MNF: Last week’s double header had a decent game and 1 bad. The bad one was the Bengals who only managed a FG in the 1Q and that was it ALL GAME. The Broncos would easily win 28-3. The decent one was only decent because although the score was close, the Jets would score 11 points in the 4Q to make the score closer than it was. Dolphins win their first game of the season 27-21.
- TNF: We got a great one that went into OT in TNF. Despite being down a lot of crucial players, the 49ers were leading at half 17-7. However in the final 2 Qs, they would only manage FGs. The Rams would come back to tie up the game with a 48 yard FG in the final 2 seconds of the game. In OT, SF would score a FG in their first possession and the Rams would go for it on 4th & 1 and fail to get it ending the game. Niners win by 3.
- There are no undefeated teams left! There were 7 close games this week:
- The Vikings would score TDs in 3 of 4 Qs to beat the Browns in London.
- The Cardinals couldn’t score in the 2H and the Titans would manage to score 16 points in the 4th to come back to win by 1. The Broncos had a huge comeback scoring 18 points in the 4Q to beat the undefeated Eagles 21-17. Speaking of undefeated teams, the Patriots matched the Bills on every score but a FG in the 1Q would make the difference. They would win with a walkoff FG and now no one is undefeated.
- The Panthers only got 1 possession in the 1Q and it ended with a fumble. Despite trailing the Dolphins at half 17-10, Carolian would flip the 2H on its head and score 17 and hold Miami to just 1 TD.
- The Bucs/Seahawks game went back and forth the win probability chart changed teams 10xs. The O/U was 44 and both teams almost scored that each. There were only 3 punts in this game (granted there were 2 Seattle turnovers) and that turned out to be the difference. Seattle was driving in the final minute when they threw an INT. that set up the game winning 39 yard FG for the Bucs.
- We also had a couple of blowouts: The Colts scored 20 points in both the 2Q and 3Q to hand handle the Raiders 40-6. The Cowboys also scored 20 points in the 2Q and had points in every other Q to put away the Jets 37-22. The Saints had a nice comeback win behind Spencer Rattler 26-14 over the Giants. Bad day for NY. The Texans went on a scoring spree, putting up 44 points to beat the Ravens by 34! The Bengals only made their game look close putting up 21 points in garbage time and still lost by 10+ to the Lions.
Golf:
- RSA Garrick Higgo was leading after Friday and Saturday’s round in the Sanderson Farms Championship with -5 and -6 rounds. However day 4, he would only card a -4 for his final round which would allow Steven Fisk, who had been lurking around in 2nd to surge to the front for a 2-shot win. His final round of -8 included 4 birdies in the final 5 holes. He was the 4th rookie to win on the PGA Tour this year.
Olympic Sports:
- Caster Semenya has officially ended her legal battle over sex eligibility rules. She has been figjting in courts since 2018 after she was banned from running her favorite race (800m) because she would’ve had to reduce her testosterone levels.
