Other headlines: UFC, US Open.

Baseball – MLB:

  • This week’s games:
    • The Cardinals were on a 5-game losing streak after last week but they managed to snap that on Monday with an 8-3 win over the Marlins. The Rockies broke their 10 game losing streak to the Dodgers with a 4-3 defeat of them that same night. We had some high scoring games on Monday as well. The Phillies, led by Trea Turner with 4 hits himself, put up 12 runs on the Mariners who lost only by 5. The White Sox shockingly put up 13 runs on the Braves who still managed 9.
    • The Braves would get the better of the White Sox the next night though in another offensive game. ATL wins that one 11-10. The Cubs would win both of their double-header games over the Brewers. The first one was 6-4 and the next was 4-1. The Yankees tied their club record of 9 HRs in a single game on Tuesday. They would beat the Rays 13-3. Ohtani would get his 44th of the season in the Dodgers 11-4 win over CO.
    • Ohtani would not have a good night on the mound the next night though as CO would win 8-3 and hand Shohei his first loss of the season. Phillies star Trea Turner was on fire this week. On Wed, he had a 5-hit day. He was only 5 of the 20 for the entire team who would beat the mariners 11-2.
    • A’s LF Tyler Soderstrom was on a 19 game hitting streak after Thursday’s win over th Twins 8-3. He also would go a perfect 4-4 at bat.
    • The longest game of the week was on Friday only going 11 innings between the Reds and the DBacks. But it was a great game with each team getting 1 in the 10th before AZ would win 6-5.
    • In the hated rivalry, the Red Sox would get major bragging rights after Saturday’s game, winning 12-1 over the Yankees. But the Yankees would get the better of BOS on Sunday 7-2.  The other NY team, the Mets would have 6 HRs in their 9-2 win over the Braves. We had a number of teams hit the double digits Saturday. The Rangers would shutout the Guardians 10-0, the Dbacks would almost do the same to the Reds 10-1, the Cubs would crush the Angels 12-1.

    • Cal Raleigh made history with the most HRs by a Catcher ever! The Mariners would win 11-4 on Sunday too so that’s a nice bonus!

  • LLWS: Nevada won the US title and advanced to the World Championship on Sunday to play CHN Taipei. NV smoked CT 8-2 to get there while CHN Taipei snuck in a single-run win over Aruba. But it was flipped in the final. NV would be scoreless while Taipei put up 7 runs to win their 18th LLWS!

Football:

  • Week 0 and already a loss in the Top 25 in the books! The Aer Lingus Classic was is in Ireland and this year we had a ranked vs ranked match up and Farmegedon going #22 Iowa ST vs #17 K St. And it was as good as predicted. It started in the pouring rain, both teams had 2 turnovers and we were tied at 7-7 and again at 14-14. K St QB Avery Johnson went 21/30 throwing 2 TDs but Iowa St’s QB Rocco Bect would do one better adding in a rushing TD on top of 2 passing TDs as well. Iowa ST would hold off the Wildcats by a FG.
  • The only other noteworthy football moment was Hawaii with a walkoff FG to win as the clock struck 0 to beat Stanford. Week 1 awaits!!
  • Preseason NFL is now over so you will start to see a lot of dropping, moving players around. Shadeur Sanders went 3/6 takign 5 sacks for 41 yards. Yikes! To be fair he did start their first game and played well but still this one was ugly and made headlines.

Golf:

  • This one will make you feel good. And no Scottie Scheffler didn’t win again although I wish (he T4). Tommy Fleetwood, the English golfer who was notorious for how many times he has played on the PGA Tour without a single win (164 to be exact), finally got his day! He has won 7xs on the European Tour but never on the PGA. He also had 30 Top 5 finishes which is the most of anyone on the PGA tour in 100 years without a victory. Until he would win the biggest prize ever with the TOUR Championship. He shared the lead going into the weekend with a -7 round on Friday (8 birdies will get you in a great spot). He would finish with a round of –2 to win by 3 over the next closest competitor.

Quick Highlights:

  • UFC: Heavy weight champion and Olympian, Gabe Stevenson, will be competing in UFC this year.

  • Tennis: US Open started Sunday and already we have a notable upset. #13 Medvedev lost to FRA Bonzi in 5 sets after losing the opening 2. On the women’s side, #6 USA Madison Keys went out in the first round to MEX Zarazua. It was a long match though but Keys is now out!
