Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s games:
- The Rockies scored 4 runs in the 9th inning to upset the Guardians 8-6. Braves OF Ronalda Acuna Jr left the Royals game early (6th inning) with tightness in his Achilles. They would still win the game though 10-7. The Twins gave their fans an unlikely win after a 90 min rain delay with a 2-run single in the 9th to beat the Red Sox by 1 and walk it off. The Angels stood in the way of the Rangers 6 game win streak. They also gave deGrom his 3rd loss of the season 6-4. The Orioles put on a clinic against the top team in the AL East (Blue Jays) with 16 hits and 11 runs to beat them 11-4 to start the week! As a matter of fact, Baltimore had their number all week until the final game in the series. They won 11-4, 16-4 and 3-2 (those two were in the same day) before getting the last one by 1 9-8.
- The Tigers got 12 runs to beat the Dbacks by 10. 6 of those runs were in the 5th inning including 3 HRs. Dodgers star Ohtani struck out 4xs but the Dodgers still got the W 5-4 over the Reds.
- The Red Sox got a 12-run victory over the Twins on Wed. Thursday only had 3 games total as it was trade deadline day. The Braves beat the Reds in a high scoring match up 12-11 in the 10th
- The Marlins beat the Yankees 13-12. The Brewers put up 25 hits on the Nationals to win 16-9. The Pirates swept the Giants to get their win streak up to 5 before dropping the next game. That game was a 16-17 loss to the Rockies! The Pirates would lose the next day too, 5-8, despite Skenes being on the mound. Mets star Pete Alonso hit his 250th HR of his career. To make it even sweeter, the Mets beat the Giants 12-6.
- The Brewers bats continued to be hot on Sunday with a 14-3 victory over the Nationals. The Twins beat the Guardians by 1 to stop their 4-game losing streak.
- The MLB played their first game in Tennessee for the Speedway Classic, which was the Reds vs Braves. 90k people were expected but then the rain went nuts and they had to postpone the game after 1 inning. It was later called ‘Baseball’s Fyre Fest’ after the fans had to eat nachoes without cheese and hotdogs without buns. They did finally get to resume the game and 4-2 Braves.
Football:
- The HoF game started with a turnover by the Lions and it didn’t get much better from there for Detroit! The Chargers took an early lead and never gave it up. They would score 2 TDs in the 1Q and continue to add on in each of the Qs following. Final score was 34-7 Chargers.
- The new class of the Hall of Fame was inducted: Sterling Sharpe, Eric Allen, Jaren Allen and Antonio Gates.
- There is no weekend without football til Feb. Pre-season starts this week. All the games are on NFL Network if any channel but hey its there! There will be football on the TV for every weekend from now until Feb.
Golf:
- Cameron Young had a reputation that no one wants, he was known for being one of the best golfers without a win (he does have 7 runner-up finishes though). However at the Wyndham Championship this weekend that all changed. He took the lead on Friday when play was suspended for weather. Saturday was played in groups of 3s to speed up play. His lead would stretch his lead to 8 before ending his 2nd round (on Sat though). Young would go 39 straight holes without a bogey and that was enough to get him his first win. He would win by 6 strokes with a score of -22.
- FedEx Cup playoffs start this week with the FedEx St. Jude in Tennessee.
Olympic Sports:
- Swimming Worlds: Team USA despite a tough start with tummy troubles ended up with the most golds in swimming 9 (barely over AUS with 8). Overall for Aquatics team USA was 3rd CHN 15 first, AUS 13 second and USA 3rd with 10.
- James Lichtenstein won the Men’s 27m high dive, winning by just 3 points.
- Gretchen Walsh got it started with the US with a win in the 100 Fly and then would add the 50m Fly later in the week.
- Katie Ledecky did Katie like things. 4 of the top 6 individuals in 1500 free were at worlds but it’s Katie Ledecky and she hasn’t lost this race since 2010 at age 13. During the race, her 800 split was 13th fastest in history in her 1500. Her first 400 would’ve made the final. She completed her 6th world title in 1500 and 17th individual title. She would also win the 800m Free but man it was close. AUS Pallister who kept her honest in the 1500m was just .36 off Katie’s time in the 800.
- Kate Douglass continued her dominance in the 200m Breast with a gold winning by over 1 second. But Douglass hasn’t swum the 100 breast since 2018 youth Olympics. 4th at the turn but she gets 2nd. GER won from lane 1 wins! Huge surprise and wins by .08.
- Luca Urlando took gold for the USA after a grueling rehab and shoulder surgery. Uga bulldog wins his first world title with a PR in the 200 Fly. Both grandparents were Olympians for Italian in T&F.
- AUS McKeown wins the 100 back again with Regan Smith in 2nd again. Kate Berkoff got the bronze. She would take gold in the 50m Back. Regan Smith entered the final day of Worlds with 4 silvers. Until medley relay, where Team USA dominated in WR fashion! In prelims swam 4 diff world champs than the final.
- Team USA would also take the Mixed 4x100m Free Relay also in WR time.
- Other medals: The Men synchro pairs 10m won bronze. First medal in the event since 2009. The women took silver in both free relays, losing both to the AUS. The men would get bronze in both.
- US Track Championships – some of the major storylines:
- Sha’Carri Richardson failed to make the final of the 200m. this might be because a week ago she was arrested for domestic violence against Christian Coleman (fellow sprinter and bf) at the airport. For the record, it looks like she shoved him into a wall, threw headphones or something at him and then Coleman refused to be a victim and didn’t press charges. She has an auto bid to the worlds in the 100m.
- Speaking of the sprints: Gabby Thomas barely makes the team as she makes the team in 3rd (2 1000s of a sec). Melissa Jefferson-Wooden completes the sweep of the 100m and 200m, which is the first time since 2003 we have seen that for an American.
- The men’s 200 got chippy! Noah Lyles came back from behind to beat Kenny Bednarek who led from the gun. But while finishing (and beating Bednarek) Lyles stared him down as he crossed the finish line. Kenny didn’t appreciate that and gave Lyles a shove after the race. The two got up in each others face and words continued to be exchanged into the post-race interview. While Kenny didn’t win this one, he did win the 100m.
- Both 800m races were crazy! Donovan Brazier comes back on the track scene with a vengeance with a win in the 800m! a 16 year old gets 2nd with 1:42! The women’s race was so slow that it was a dead sprint to the line with the top 4 women all under 2 minutes.
- Brining back a vet: Dalilah Muhammad has announced that she will retire after this season but her season continues as she won the US title in the W 400h.
- Rai Benjamin not lost to American since 2017 and that streak continues as he destroyed the field in the 400h. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won the flat 400m.
- Field dominance continued for Tara Davis-Woodhall in the LJ, Jasmine Moore in the TJ and Valerie Allman in the Discuss. Anna Hall is looking strong in the hept with a 6899 point finish!
- Craziness: Joe Kovacs did not make the team, finishing 4th in the men’s shot. He has been a staple for Team USA for a long time. Athing Mu also failed to advance to the finals of the 800.
- I cant believe I’m saying this but the men’s distance races were awesome to watch. In the men’s 5K, 7 of the finalists were within 1.8 seconds of each other! With the Olympic gold medalist in the 1500, Cole Hocker winning (he would get 3rd in the 1500 as well).
Quick Highlights:
- Basketball: Knicks and Mikal Bridges reached a 4-year extension to keep the star in NY for $150MM. Luka Doncic also signed a deal with the Lakers for $165MM for 3 years. De’Aaron Fox got his pay day with the Spurs at $229MM for 4 years.
- F1: Again it was a week of McLaren dominance. Norris took first in a battle with his teammate Piastri only winning by .698 seconds!
- Tour de France Femmes: FRA Pauline Ferrand-Prevot won the TdF in her debut. She won gold in Paris in Mountain biking.
