Basketball-NBA:

  • This week’s games: The beginning of the week was slow with only 7 games across three days. Tues was the NBA Cup Quarterfinals. The Magic started off slow with only 17 points in the 1Q but rallied to beat the Heat 117-108. In contrast, the Knicks started off hot with 35 and 34 points in the first 2Qs. The Raptors only managed 13 in the 2Q so that was a big gap that never got close. Knicks win 117-101. The Thunder annihilated the Suns by 49. Despite Luka’s 35 points for LA, the Spurs won by 13.
  • The Pelicans scored 143 points in their win over the Trail Blazers.
  • Cavs star Mitchell was the highest scorer of the week with 48 points against the Wizards who played well despite only having 3 wins on the season. They only lost to the Cavs by 4. Two players that same day had 39 points with Steph Curry (the Warriors would still lose to the TWolves by 7) and Jazz’ George and they would win their game over the Grizzlies. All of that action was on Friday.
  • The NBA Cup Semifinals were on Saturday. The Magic scored 28 points in 3Qs but the Kicks continued to roll. In a shocking upset, the Thunder lost to the Spurs in a close one. At one point, OKC led by 16 late in the 2Q. Within 5 min of the 2H, that lead had shrunk to 1 and then San Antonio took the lead in the next 1:30. Then the game went back and forth but the Spurs won by 2.
  • The Nets crushed the Bucks on Sunday by 45 as Milwaukee wouldn’t score 26+ in every q and 11 in the final – yikes! The Wizards got their 4th win of the season after the Pacers only scored 15 in the 2Q and another in the teens in 3Q. Washington would win 108-89. The Pelicans beat the Bulls by 10. The Hornets got their 8th win of the season by beating the Cavs in OT.

Basketball – NCAA:

  • Not a lot of upsets this week: But it was the Jimmy V Classic. Defending champ #18 Florida took on the year priors champ #5 UConn. UConn took the lead at half by 7 and although Florida tried to mount a comeback, UConn held them off to win by 4.
  • Saturday was big! #12 Alabama started off hot in their battle against #1 Arizona, scoring 41 but that was a narrow margin to the Wildcats 39. But man the Wildcats came back in the 2H. They scored 57 points to easily handle Alabama by 21 points. The Seattle Hoops Showdown was #8 Gonzaga vs #25 UCLA. Gonzaga won in both halves to win by 10. #16 Texas Tech vs #17 Arkansas was one game that everyone was looking forward to this week. The Red Raiders started off well with 49 points, winning by 6 after the first 20 min of the game. But after half, the Razorbacks came back scoring 50 compared to TT’s 37 to win by 7. The other ranked vs ranked match up that day was #23 Nebraska and #13 Illinois. The teams were tied at 37 a piece at halftime but then Illinois tied it up at 80 with just 16 seconds left. It looked like we were headed to OT. But Cornhuskers Jamarques Lawrence hit a buzzer beater 3-pointer to win in epic fashion and Nebraska remains undefeated.
  • Undefeated teams: Arizona, Michigan, Duke, Iowa St, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Miami (OH).
  • Winless: SC St.

Football – NCAAF:

  • The Heisman Trophy was awarded on Saturday and goes to the most outstanding player in football. This year that is Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza. He is the first Hoosier to win the award since it started in 1935. He won handily (not a landslide but it wasn’t close). Diego Pavia got 2nd. His speech was great and he is usually super quotable so we knew it was going to be good. He spoke Spanish to his grandparents and shared the award with his mom who has MS. Such a great guy!

  • Early last week the news broke that Michigan had fired their HC Sherrone Moore after an investigation had been completed at the university and it was found that he had inappropriate relations with a staffer. That staffer turned Sherrone in herself and apparently the affair had gone on for years before ending on Dec 8th. This all happened on the 10th. Then the next day he was arrested after he broke into the EAs house and supposedly threatened to kill himself (and potentially her or make her watch – I have heard/seen both). Talk about a total melt down and absolutely uprooting that family. Sherrone was married with 3 daughters!
  • A great American tradition, it was Army vs Navy week! Navy drew first blood with a TD in the 1Q. Both teams only got 1 possession in the 1Q with Armys going into the 2Q – both ended with TDs. Army added 2 FGs after Navy had a fumble to take the lead 13-7. Another FG added to it. Two plays later, Army threw an INT and Navy got a TD off of it. That was all it took! Navy wins by 1!
  • Beginning of bowl season: Prairie View A&M was winning 21-0 at halftime and I didn’t even turn it on after that but I should’ve! The Bulldogs from SC St comeback scoring 5 TDs in the 2H to take this game to OT. 4OTs to be exact. 1OT was FGs each. Then 2OT, SC St threw an INT and Prairie View missed a 31 yard FG. The Bulldogs would pull it off! Washington crushed Boise St 38-10.

Football – NFL:

  • MNF: There were 8 turnovers in the game between the Eagles and Chargers. 5 for Phili and 3 for LA. Phili scored 3 FGs in a row in the first 3 Qs until the 4Q when the Eagles would get their first TD. In contrast, LA scored a TD on the first drive. When the Eagles scored their TD, that was enough of a comeback to tie it up and take the game to OT. The Chargers got the ball first and only managed a FG. That would be enough as the Eagles would drive down into the red zone and then Jalen Hurts threw an INT. Game sealed!
  • TNF: The Falcons and Bucs game was close down to the end. Kirk Cousins threw for 373 yards and 3 TDs compared to Baker’s 277 and 2 but 1 INT. ATL wins by 1.
  • There were 5 close games:
    • The Chargers had another close win although not as close as MNF OT. Patrick Mahomes went down in the final 2 min of the game. Would that have changed the outcome, not really as the chiefs only scored 1 TD before that. It was enough for the Chargers to win by 3.
    • The Pats were winning handily 24-7 at half and looked to add another win to their list but the Bills came back big time with 28 points (2 Qs of 14). The Saints also came back from being down, scoring 10 points in the 4th to win by 3 over the Panthers. The Seahawks scored 18 points in their game against the Colts. All 18 points were FGs – 6 of them! That was enough to keep the Colts at bay and they scored the only TD in the game. The Rams had 519 yards in their game over the Lions. Although the Lions were winning at half time by 7 but the Rams scored 17 unanswered points in the 3Q and piled on in the 4th to win.
  • Some not so close games:
    • The Broncos won their 11th straight game and clinched a playoff game with their 8 point win over the Packers. The Texans started off hot with 17 points to take that lead against the Cardinals. Final score was 40-20. The Commanders scored 21 points in the 1H to beath the Giants by 8. The Jags crushed the Jets 48-20. Trevor Lawrence had 6 TDs. The Eagles shutout the Raiders 31-0. The Ravens also shutout the Bengals 24-0. The Bears got close winning their game over the Browns 31-3.
  • SNF: The Vikings Cowboys game was a good one. It was back and forth, Cowboys TD, Viks TD, Cowboys TD, Viks TD. Then in the 2H, Dallas marched down the field twice but only ended up with FGs. Then MN would go to work scoring the next 17 points to take the lead by 10 in the final 1:08 of the game. Dallas would only get another FG to make the final score 34-26.
  • Checking in on the standings as we now have some eliminated form playoff teams.
    • In the AFC: The Broncos have secured their spot in the playoffs.
      • Eliminated: Benagls and Cheifs have been added. Jets, Browns, Raiders and the Titans (2-11).
    • In the NFC: The Rams have officially clinched their spot in the playoffs.
      • Eliminated: Vikings, Falcons, Cardinals, Saints, Commanders and the Giants (2-11).

Quick Highlights:

  • Snoop Dogg is joining Team USA as an honorary coach for the Winter Olympic games.
  • Grand Slam Track series has filed for bankruptcy. This was Michael Johnson’s track series that paid six-figure prizes but apparently those payments weren’t made.
  • Skiing: Lindsey Vonn is officially back on top of the World Cup circuit. She won her first world cup downhill since 2018 at the age of 41! This was 5 years since her retirement and 8 years since her last victory. She won by 0.98. NZ Alice Robinson continues to crush it. This time in the Super G, taking her first victory in that discipline.
  • NCAA Volleyball: #1 and undefeated Nebraska finally took a loss. The Texas A&M Aggies beat them this weekend to send them home in the tournament. Play continues this week. Also #3 Wisconsin beat #1 Texas in 4 sets at home. So two 3 seeds beat 1s to make it to the semis.
  • The Grant Thornton Invitational is the only mixed team event. Team events seem to work for Andrew Novak, who won the Zurich Classic in NOLA with Ben Griffin earlier this year. He would win this one with his partner Lauren Coughlin. They would win by 3 strokes!
