Weekly Update

Basketball – NBA: Not covering this week but the ASG was this past weekend.

Basketball – NCAAM: Covering this week’s upsets including undefeated #1 Arizona twice!

Olympic Sports: US Golds. US Victories. Huge upsets. Other stories.

Quick Headlines: PGA. NCAAM. NBA.

Basketball-NBA:

  • Not covering this week.

Basketball – NCAA:

  • This week’s games:
    • On Monday, the undefeated #1 team Arizona goes down to Kansas. Despite leading at halftime the Jayhawks played a nice 2H to come back and this was all without their star Darren Peterson.
    • Tuesday was insane! TCU shocked #5 Iowa St putting up the final 12 points of the game to beat the Cyclones who had their lowest point total of the season with only 55. Doesn’t help when you have 17 turnovers. Then we had a thriller in the Big ten. #13 Purdue and #7 Nebraska went to OT. Purdue was leading by 22 points at one point in the game but Nebraska would bring it back to take this game to OT. Purdue would hold on to win. Then that same night (it was a doozy), Wisconsin had a huge upset also in OT of #8 Illinois. The Badgers were down 12 points in the 2H and still came back to tie it up and win in OT. #11 UNC had a hangover game after beating their rival and dropped this one to Miami losing in both halves.
    • #20 Clemson put up 33 in both halves but that was not enough to put away Vtech who scored more in both to win by 10. The Tigers would lose again on Sat but to #4 Duke so no surprise. They would lose by 23 points to the Blue Devils.
    • No ranked teams in action on Thurs. On Friday, the Badgers would take down another top 10 team. This time it was #10 Michigan St and it was a beating. Wisconsin wins by 21 points.
    • Saturday was a busy day as well. #1 Arizona was back in action against another top 25 team in #16 Texas Tech. The two teams were tied after 1H both with 32 points. They would also score 34 points a piece in the 2H to head to OT. JT Toppin was the highest scorer of the game with 31 points to hand the Wildcats their 2nd loss of the season and the week! Let’s go to the team that beat the Wildcats earlier, the #9 Jayhawks played #5 Iowa St. The Cyclones bounced back from their loss nicely putting up 37 in both halves to easily take out Kansas 74-56. Newly ranked #25 Kentucky would had a good 2H putting up 49 but that wouldn’t help them put away the reigning champs who also ended up 49 but also was in the 40s in the 1H. Florida wins by 9.

Olympic Sports:

  • Milan Cortina – US Golds and victories:
    • I told you months ago to get used to the name, Jordon Stolz for this Olympic games. And he is showing why. He is 2/2 golds in his events. He started with the 1000m with the larest margin of victory since 1984. He then skated in the 500m which was going to be his likely his toughest race as it is the shortest in long track. He competed with NED Boo and both men went below the OR but Stolz beat Boo to the line and wins again by a large margin (largest in 20 years) and he is not done.
    • For the first time, Team USA advanced to the mixed doubles gold medal match. They would face the SWE. It would come down to the final turn but SWE would lay the hammer down and knock the US out and takes the gold. But we get the silver! A huge accomplishment.
    • Not a gold but Ryan CS would grab a silver in the Super G. He is 1 of 6 Olympians in the family so nice to see him get his own medal.
    • For the first time in 50 years, team USA would get a medal in CC Skiing thanks to Ben Ogden. He would ski brilliantly to end up with the silver only trailing the goat from NOR.
    • Alex Hall comes away from the ski slopestyle with the silver. Ruud would win gold from his first run!
    • USA’s Ashley Farquardson comes back to finish her fourth run in the single luge in bronze medal position after dropping to 7th after her 2nd
    • After Sunday night, we are sitting at 5 golds, 8 silvers and 4 bronze.

  • Some huge upsets:
    • Going back to the beginning of the week. The Alpine combo was a great race (or races) and our first time to see Michaela Shiffrin in action. Breezy Johnson would come back after her gold in the downhill to repeat and put up the leading time on the downhill run of this new event. That set up Shiffrin to run the slalom from the front. The other USA team was in 4th. The slalom course kicked ass and took names with only 50% of the field finishing. Remember Shiffrin came away from Beijing with 3 falls and no medals. And this one wouldt have a dream start either. Shiffrin did make it down the course but she skied conservatively and finished in 4th – 1 place off the podium. The other American team would sneak in for the bronze.
    • Actually not an upset but defying the odds, Jessie diggings bruised her ribs in her previous race but she would fight back in the 10K and would ski brilliantly to claim bronze.
    • In the men’s figure skating competition, we all know Ilia Malinin was supposed to be one of the biggest stars of these games and he came out swinging in the Team competition. To one surprise, he was in the lead after the short program. We all held our breath to see if he was going to be the first to ever land a quad axel in Olympic competition and instead we got our minds blown in a different way. To say he choked would be to put it mildly. After the first jump, almost every single other one had an issue. He fell, he did singles instead of quads and triples. It was devastating.
    • In the women’s halfpipe, Chloe Kim, another huge name of these games, was going for the three-peat which had never been done by any boarder. Even Shaun White won 3 golds but not in consecutive Olympics. She put up a huge score of 88. But KOR Choi comes in clutch on the final run with a 90. Kim would get the rebuttal and final run but couldn’t nail the double. She would show great sportsmanship and hug the KOR which is the first medal for the country in this event. Chloe gets the silver.
    • In Women’s double moguls, Team USA had 1 American in each of the quarterfinal and it looked like we could have an all American semi. However only 2 would move on and then of those two, only 1 would make the gold medal final. The AUS would beat our American in that final but the American beat the FRA in the bronze even after finishing behind her in time but she was awarded more points for her tricks and handling of the moguls. Don’t feel too bad for the ladies though as both also got medals in the individual moguls. Lemley who got bronze in doubles got the gold in singles. Kauf got silver in both.
    • In the 500m long track, Brittany Bowe took 2nd after her heat and her head to head competitor NED Kok destroyed the OR to take the lead. However in the final pairing, NED Leerdam puts down a huge time, also breaking the OR and taking the top spot. NED go 1-2 and Bowe is left off the podium in her final Olympics.

  • Other Olympic stories:
    • In the Giant Slalom, it was a story of redemption and come back with ITA Frederica Brignone, who literally came to the Olympics really only expecting to carry the flag after a huge injury. But she comes back to win gold in the Giant Slalom and the Super G. Shiffrin finished 10th in the Giant Slalom although she was an outsider looking in at a medal for this one. Breezy Johnson would crash into the fencing in the women’s Super G but she still had a great day as her bf would propose at the finish line!
    • BRA gets its first Olympic medal at a winter games ever and its gold. At one point the broadcast said it was the first south American country to get a gold but I didn’t check that. They did it with an extraordinary performance by Pinheiro in the Giant Slalom. He put up such a monster first run that barely any skiers were within 1 full second of his time.
    • AUS Cooper Woods wins the single men’s moguls in a huge upsets, upsetting all the big names. He actually tied the time of one of the leaders but he would win a tiebreakers which was based on turns. Talk about a close one!

Quick Highlights:

  • AT&T Pebble Beach: 6 different players had the lead at some point in the final round including World #1 Scottie Scheffler. Scottie came back a historic 8 shots (he had 3 eagles and a final round of 63). But Colin Morikawa managed to get a tap in birdie on the final hole to clinch his first win in 28 months.
  • NBA: Chris Paul has announced his retirement after 21 years in the NBA.
  • NCAAM: Alabama’s Bediako is now not allowed to compete in the NCAA anymore after a judge overturned the ruling.
