Basketball-NBA:
- This week’s games: The Hornets had a good week. They got the win over the 76ers on Monday 130-93, the Grizzlies on Wed, the Mavericks on Thurs and the Spurs on Saturday. So they now sit at 6 wins in a row and play tonight.
- On the flip side, the Mavericks Cooper Flagg put up 80+ points in their last two games and in both of those games, Dallas lost. They have lost 4 in a row (and 1 was postponed).
- The Wizards got their 11th win of the season, beating the Trail Blazers by 4 and the next night #12 beating the Bucks by 10. The Pacers got their 12th on Wed over the Bulls by 3.
- Despite, SGA scoring 30 points, the TWolves beat OKC by 12 on Thurs. The Pelicans got their 13th with the Grizzlies only managing 15 in the 3Q. The Nets were consistent in their game Friday to beat the Jazz by 10. The Pacers put up 45 points in the 2Q to take the win over the Hawks by 5.
- The Clippers got a nice win on Sunday after the Suns started off a little slow. PHX never scored 30 points in any Q.
- On another NBA note, Paul George has been suspended for 25 games for breaking team drug rules.
Basketball – NCAA:
- This week’s games: Monday was a good start with 2 ranked matchups. #1 Arizona vs #13 BYU was a good one. It started off with the Wildcats winning 44-31 at the end of halftime. But the cougs came back with a vengeance, outscoring the #1 team by 10 but that was still 3 points short. Then we headed to the ACC, #4 Duke vs #20 Louisville. This game was not a good one. Duke kicked the Cards ass and won by 30. Then on Tuesday, we had a top 5 matchup between undefeated #5 Nebraska and #3 Michigan. The 1H was back and forth and high scoring with Nebraska taking the lead by 2 scoring 50. Things calmed down in the 2H with both teams scoring almost half of their first half score. But Michigan came back to win by 3 and hand the Cornhuskers their first loss. #12 Purdue loss again this time to Indiana who grabbed enough of a lead in the 1H to stay the course 72-67. Michigan bounced back against their in-state rival #7 Michigan St on Friday. The Wolverines had an even game putting up 42 and 41 to win by 12.
- On Saturday, there was a lot of action with 15 teams playing. #11 Texas Tech played UCF and weirdly both teams scored the same amount in both halves 44-40 but UCF would be the higher and thus won by 8. Then you had a matchup of NBA prospects in #13 BYU AJ Dybansa vs #14 Kansas’ Darren Petersen. The Jayhawks came out swinging leading 53-33 at half. And although BYU would come back in the 2H, it was not enough beat KU. Another basketball blue blood, Kentucky, upset #15 Arkansas beating them in both halves.
- On Sunday, there was another top 10 matchup #9 Illinois vs #5 Nebraska. Nebraska had the upper hand after halftime leading the Illini by 6. However Illinois won its 11th straight game putting away the Huskers outscoring them 15 points in the 2H to win by 9. That’s Nebraska’s 2nd loss of the season and the week. The reigning champs, #19 Florida put up 100 points on #23 Alabama. The Gators put the Tide away easily winning in both halves.
Golf:
- Brooks Koepka teed it up back on the PGA Tour this weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open and it was good to see him back. But he wasn’t the headliner after the weekend. Justin Rose broke his own course record after 36 holes by 2 strokes. He then continued domination over the weekend to win by 7 shots. His final score of -23 broke Tiger Woods record at Torrey Pines from 1999. He is the first wire to wire winner since 1971.
Tennis:
- Australian open:
- The men’s Quarterfinals there were no upsets. Everyone who was supposed to win won although #25 USA Tien gave Zverev a tougher 4-set match compared to the other 3-set sweeps. In the Semis, things were much closer. Djokovic and Sinner rotated winning sets until the Serbian finally broke the ITA in the final set 6-4. #1 Alcaraz and #3 GER Zverev’s match was a battle! 3 of the sets were to tie breakers and another (and the final one) went to 7 sets. That set up Djokovic and Alcaraz in the final and Carlos is not undefeated against Novak for nothing. He made it 3-0 after this one, winning in 4 sets, only dropping the first one. He is now the youngest player to obtain the Career Grand Slam.
- On the women’s side, despite having half the field of Americans (4 of 8), only 1 would advance past the Quarterfinals. The only one to do so was Pegula who faced off another American but upsetting Anisomova. There were 2 other upsets though. #3 Coco Gauff fell badly to Svitolina 1-6, 2-6 – yikes. Hard to find a worse score than that. #5 Rybakina had a tough 2-setter with #2 Swiatek but managed to upset the Polish player to advance. Sabalenka made quick work of Svitolina and Rybakina defeated Pegula with tiebreakers in the 2nd set. That set up a rematch fo the 2023 Australian open and this time Rybakina gets her revenge. In a three set thriller, the KAZ player wins her 2nd Grand Slam (her first was 2022 Wimbledon).
Quick Highlights:
- Skiing: Vonn took a hard fall and is TBD for the Olympics. This would be gut wrenching as she has made so far such a great come back.
