Basketball – NBA: Just quick headlines with the short week.
Basketball – NCAAM: Plenty of upsets and ranked vs ranked matchups
Olympic Sports: Highest gold medal count for Team USA in a winter games. Sad that they are over!
Other headlines: Golf.
Basketball-NBA:
- Highlights from the short week:
- DET Cunningham was the highest scorer of the week with 42 points on the first day back from the ASG. That helped them beat the Knicks 126-111.
- The Nuggets put up a monster 157 on Friday night against the Trail Blazers. That is the highest score of the season so far. They scored 40+ in the first three Qs. They won by 54!
- The Bucks had their biggest win (margin wise) of the season crushing the Pelicans by 21.
Basketball – NCAA:
- This week’s games:
- Monday we started with a monster match up in the Big 12, #2 Houston vs #6 Iowa St. Both teams would put up 27 in the 2H but the Cyclones managed to start off better winning a close on by 3.
- Tues was insane! Newly #1 Michigan managed to outlast a great loud crowd at #7 Purdue. Michigan was leading by 16 at halftime and although the Boilermakers would come back a bit putting up 48, it wasn’t enough. Also on Tues, #9 Nebraska goes down to unranked Iowa only scoring 52 points – yikes! #13 Texas Tech lost twice on Tues. Not only did they lose their game to Arizona St but they also would lose their best player in that game. It would come out later that he tore his ACL so he is out for the season and this will greatly affect the Red Raiders tournament results. NC ST had their largest win over #16 UNC of all time. The Wolfpack would get 40+ in both halves and destroy the Tar Heels by 24. #18 St. Louis dropped their first A10 game of the year to the Rhodys who sit at .500 in the conference. SMU came out kickin in the 1H putting up 52 but that was only beating #21 Louisville by 3. But the ponies would hold on to win by 10. #24 Wisconsin lost big time to Ohio St to be the final upset of the day. The Badgers lost by 17.
- Sat was action packed starting with just the 3rd time that the top 4 teams all played each other in the regular season. Lets start with #1 Michigan vs #3 Duke. The teams were evenly matched in the stats but duke had the lead for 61% of the game with the largest being 8 points. The would win narrowly in both halves to win by 5. Then in the Big 12, #2 Houston played #4 Arizona. And although Arizona had lost a couple of games now, this game wouldn’t be one of them. Hosuton would only lead for 2:30 min of the entire game thas only 4% whereas Arizona led for 91% their largest being 10. UH did manage to come back right after the half but it wasn’t enough to hold off the wildcats who win this one 73-66. We had another big one in the Big 12, #6 Iowa St would lose to #23 BYU. This is BYU’s first BIG win of the season which was something they were missing in their resume. BYU took that lead in the 1H and wouldn’t give it back to win by 10. Then we had some shockers. #8 Kansas would score 34 in both halves but Cinci would put up 48 in the 2H to upset the Jayhawks. #10 Illinois put up 50 in the 1H but then faltered and let UCLA back into the game and would take it to OT after a 23-point comeback. The Bruins would get the late layup to win by 1 and take the W. Tennessee may not be ranked anymore but they are certainly making a good argument for it after beating #19 Vanderbilt in a close one.
Olympic Sports:
- Milan Cortina – US Golds and victories:
- The USA finishes with our highest gold medal count of any winter Olympic games with 12, 12 silvers, 9 bronze for a total of 33. NOR finishes a top the leaderboard with 41 medals (18 golds) which is the most ever won by a single country in a winter Olympics.
- Mikaela Shiffrin’s Olympics didnt start off as a dream but better than the last one. But this week it got better. Shiffrin takes the gold 57 of 71 times after leading after run 1. She has a .82 lead over the field going into the final slalom run. Final two skiers before her skied out and she saw the one before her. But she went down the run and gained time so she is golden again! She wins by 1.5 seconds!!
- Team USA were trying to defend their gold in the mixed team aerials. It was a huge upset in 2022 and this time while not as surprising, it was still a shock. Only 1 person returned from that team that won in Beijing. But when CHN’s 2 of 3 skiers fell on their landings, that will do it. Team USA defends.
- Amber Glenn was in first after her stellar come back in the free skate. Her short started her in 10th (check). She was in the leaders chair til 4 skaters to go. Alysa liu’s execution score was above everyone before she was even done. But it came down the final skaters from jpn the vet Kaori and a 17 year olf. But they would both mess up their combinations and Alysa becomes the first gold since 2002 Sarah Hughes. First medal for the us since 2006. Glenn would finish off the podium.
- Bobsleigh: Elena Meyers Taylor came back on the final run to clinch the top spot and she got some help from GER Nolte who had her worst run of the competition. And just like that Meyers Taylor gets her first gold that had always illuded her. Kallie Humphries (one of the best drivers in the sport) takes bronze so the US go 1&3.
- The Men’s freeski was stacked (unlike the womens where Eilene Gu is American but competes for CHN and she defends). All 3 Americans fell on their 1st run. But then Alex Ferreira would go into 2nd with a 90. Nick Goepper would be in 3rd with an 89. He would not improve on this final run but Alex would to grab the top spot with a 93.75, just .75 in front of EST Henry. The other two americans finish 4 and 5.
- Mac forehand scored a 98 on the final run to take the lead with one skier to go in the Freeski Big Air. However NOR Forstad put up 3 scores of 95,97,98 on his three runs to claim gold.
- Jake Caner clams bronze in snowboard slopestyle. UsA’s Mangenello wins bronze in the women’s mass start.
- In hockey both men’s and women’s we played Canada in the gold medal match. The Us women won which wasn’t a huge surprise but so do the men! In OT just 1:40 into Ot when Canada had a lot more shots on goal. We prob should’ve lost in regulation. But man the shot was perfection and almost 3 on 1. First men’s gold since 1980.
- Some huge upsets:
- Stolz missed his first gold by taking silver in the 1500. 4 men broke the OR in that race so it was a stacked field. He missed the medals in the mass start completely. 2 athletes went out and no one was willing to chase them. Stolz was hoping someone would but alas and even he wasnt willing to but he led the peleton which I think messed up his game. 40 year old NED wins gold in mass start.
- Not necessarily an upset but USA Corinne Stoddard had a rough Olympics falling at least 3xs. She even opened up about it on social media and was very candid about how embarasing it was. But in her final event, the 1500, she would make the final. No only that but she would get Bronze – Team USA’s only medal in short track.
- Team pursuit the US men are the favs and they looked in the semis. They were the ones who engineered a new way of skating in the team pursuit which is where you don’t switch leading skaters. But when they got to the final, the home team ITA started from behind but crawled back and eventually took a whole second out of the americans. Big upset as USA was the favs coming in.
- Other Olympic stories:
- JPN wins the pairs figure skating with a huge score in the free skate. This was after a shaky short program where we thought they lost it. GEO wins its first winter medal ever! Getting silver.
- CHN Shoo Ming Tsao successfully defended her gold. She is the first to do that in aerials ever. he husband also competed in the same event on the men’s side.
- Ned wins their 5th straight gold in w 1500.
- Short track 500 Men’s. 7 straight golds from pole. But CAN Dubois ruins the triple crown run for Ned van t’ wout. But it wasn’t the worst thing for Jens because his brother was also in the race. They get 2 and 3.
- Spain wins bronze and gold in the debut of ski mountaineering. Think of it like the triathlon.
- NOR star Klabo is the Michael Phelps of CC skiing. Literally he won all 6 of the events he entered into. That is the most ever in a single winter games. the previous record was held by USA speed skater Eric Heiden who was shown a lot these games (5 in 1980 Lake Placid). This puts his total up to 11 which makes him just behind Phelps as the most decorated olympian who sits as 23 golds.
Quick Highlights:
- Golf: Genesis Invitational: Jacob Bridgeman got his first win on the PGA Tour in a stacked field at the Gensis. He had a 6 shot lead into the final round but the field closed in on him including Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy. He did end up winning by 1!
- Greyersman got a hole in one.
