Basketball-NBA:

  • This week’s games:
    • The Hornets beat the Pelicans on Monday after NOLA only put up 13 points in the entire 4Q. Ew. In contrast, the TWolves put up 42 in the final Q but still lost by 9 to the Grizzlies.
    • The Bucks upset the Bills on Tues 131-115. The Spurs upset the Thunder although at this point should it be considered an upset? I feel like now SA should be favored over the Thunder but they were not. OKC -2.5 but the spurs win by 10. Two games on Wed went into OT. The Bucks needed it to beat the Pelicans. And the Nuggets/Knicks actually needed 2OT. The Nuggets ‘won’ the 1st and 4th Q while the Knicks won the middle 2Qs. NY had the lead for 65% of the game and Brunson scored 42. At the end of the 1OT, DEN got fouled and nailed their free throws to tie it back up. NY would win the 2OT by 5.
    • It was announced on Wed that SGA would miss every game until after the All Star break with an abdominal strain. The wizards upset the Pistons 126-117 after a slow start but they would come back to win. The Rockets lost to the Hornets by 10. And the warriors beat the Suns but barely and that was with a 17 point 3Q.
    • On Thursday, the Knicks only scored 80 points in their game against the Pistons who crushed them 118-80. The Pelicans managed to upset the TWolves on the same night in a close one by 4.
    • There were only 4 games on Sunday as there were more important things to watch. Over the weekend, SGA’s injury took a toll against the Rockets Friday. Houston won by 6. The Knicks and Celtics faced off in what was supposed to be a good game but alas Boston only managed 89 points. NY would crush them 111-89. The Clippers put up 115 to beat the TWolves.
  • There were a lot of trades being finalized this week as we head into the All-Star break. The Mavs have traded Anthony Davis to the Wizards. That’s notable for 2 things 1 – AD was the one they traded Luka for and 2 the Wizards also picked up Trae Young this season.

Basketball – NCAAM:

  • This week’s games:
    • Monday had a great one with 11 Kansas vs 13. Texas Tech. This was a back and forth game with the largest lead going to the Red Raiders with 10 points and only holding the lead for 55% of the game. The team favored changed 19xs on the win probability chart. And we were tied with 1:20 to go in the game at 61s but Jayhawk star Darryn Peterson made a 26 foot 3-pointer to win it for KU.
    • On Wed, there were two huge losses. This bad a losses hadn’t happened on same day since 1992. Portland beats #6 Zags. That alone hadn’t happened in 12 years and as Gonzaga gets ready to leave the WCC for the Pac 12, they will remember this forever. That is also Portland’s highest ranked win ever. Then 10-12 unranked Minnesota beat #10 Michigan St despite letting the Spartans almost comeback from a 11 point deficit. Also that night OSU who is on the verge of being ranked (and this will help) beat #19 BYU with a killer 58-point 2H. To put that in perspective, they would only score 47 points total against #1 Arizona on Sat.
    • #3 UConn vs #22 St. John’s was at MSG on Friday for the primetime game it was. We were tied at halftime but the Red Storm stormed in the 2H to win by 9. That ends UConn’s 18 game win streak.
    • Over the weekend, we also had THE game. #4 Duke vs #14 UNC and lately Duke had been the victor. It certainly looked that way as the Blue Devils outscores UNC 41-29 in the 1H. But then UNC came back in a huge way with Wilson giving Boozer a run for his money. UNC would come back to win 71-68 in a classic. Then a matchup in the Big Ten of #5 Illinois and #10 Michigan St. Despite the loss earlier in the week for the Spartans, this game lived up to the hype. It was close the whole game. So close we would go to OT. But Mich St would get the last laugh here upsetting the Illini by 3. In the Big 12, #8 Houston won in both halves putting away #16 BYU. BYU is having trouble getting their first big win despite only having 6 losses in the season. Their only ranked win was #23 Wisconsin. OU was routing #15 Vandy beating them by 14 points after 1H but they let them come back in when they led by 19 with 3 to go. It was almost as though both teams didn’t want to win this game as Vandy also had costly turnovers. Vandy made a 3 with 6 to go to bring it back to 2 points in the final 5. Ou nailed the field goals and Vandy hits another three as time expired but those free throws had the Sooners up by 4 so they won by 1. #25 Tennessee came out hot scoring 47 to be up 14 at half but Kentucky came back to score 41 to win by 3.

Football:

  • The Super Bowl (SB 60) was boring. Theres not other word for it. We had nothing but FGs the entire 1H (and really 3Qs) and the Patriots longest drive had been 28 yards and Maye had been sacked 5xs. We ended up going into 3Q with no TDs (only 2nd time in history that has happened) but we finally got one after the first turnover of the game put the Seahawks insides the redzone after Drake Maye fumbled the ball with 10 seconds left in the 3Q. That resulted in a TD which came at the 13:24 mark. We were still on pace for a shutout but The Pats weren’t going to roll over. They had 2 huge completions to score their first TD in just 1 min later. Seattle would continue to pile on though with a FG and TD after 2 INTs by the Pats. The Seahawks put it away final score 29-13. HC Mike McDonald becomes the 3rd youngest coach to win the SB at age 38 and the Seahawks are just the 17th franchise to win multiple SBs – now at 2!

Golf:

  • Chris Gotterup was near the top of the leaderboard or atop it all week after he opened with a 63. But the next two days in the 70s let the field catch up. But his final round of 64 brought him within striking distance again. He finished his round still 1 shot behind Hideki Matsuyama. Hideki then hit a bad tee shot and had his first bogey of the day to force a playoff. He would then hit an even worse shot in the play-off, hitting his tee shot into the water. That allowed Gotterup to win with a birdie. This is now Chris’ 4th win on the PGA Tour.

Olympic Sports:

  • Milan Cortina – US Golds:
    • All of the US had Sunday marked on our calendars for the triumphant return of Lindsay Vonn in the women’s downhill. That was obviously slightly derailed when she tore his ACL one of the final races before the Olympics. But she managed during her training runs. However just a couple of seconds and 3 turns into her run (you only get one) she wiped out and had to helicoptered off the mountain. No word yet on her condition. So it looks like the American hopes were dashed but Breezy Johnson would answer the call. She would win the downhill and give Team USA its first medal and 1st gold of these games by .04 seconds. This is the first gold in the event since 2010 when Vonn won it. I would say this was a surprise even though she had been doing well. She improved from 6th to 1st after the 2 training runs but she beat home town fav and famous Sophia Goggia who took the bronze.
    • The Figure Skating Team competition started early and Team USA and JPN had been trading wins. The Ice Dance was the biggest advantage for the US with JPN only getting 9 points to the USA 20. But it would flip with the Pairs competition were the Americans would only tally 15 between Qualify and Finals. The US was 2 points up going into the final 2 competitions (the W free and M Free). However Amber Glenn had a wobbly performance (no falls though) to get third while Kaori Sakamoto was magical for JPN winning it all. That left us tied going into the men’s free skate. And although Ilia Malinin was the favorite, he did lose the short program. However he isn’t called the Quad God for no reason. His technical score was so high after all was said and done (without the Quad Axel) he put up a monster score of 200 points. Sato from JPN just couldn’t keep up but he kept the judges honest. He would lose by 6 points and Team USA takes the Team event in back to back Olympics.
    • That is it for the medals for USA after 3 days. ITA has 9 so far as their total (1 gold) but NOR leads with 3 golds and 6 total.
  • Other Olympic stories:
    • Speed Skating: Ita LOLLOBRIGIDA wins with OR for their first gold of their home games. It was on her 35 bday and is the first gold for ITA in long track ever. Moving to the M 5K. NOR Eitrem broke the OR by 5 seconds and a CZE skater took silver which is the first medal in speed skating on the men’s side for them. No NED on either podium which hasn’t happened in the last 10 olympics.
    • USA’s Hillary Knight tied us Olympic goals record with 14 in the game vs FIN.

Quick Highlights:

  • Both Oklahoma and Texas both lost on the Softball diamond in the opening weekend of the sport. Oklahoma lost to #18 Arizona in their 2nd Texas lost to #9 Nebraska.
