Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- Last week we ended with the Guardians losing 10 in a row. They would snap that streak on Monday with a win over the Astros.
- The Mets got the W in extra innings over the Orioles because Juan Soto drove in the final go ahead run. Yankees Aaron Judge and Mariners Cal Raleigh exchanged HRs but the Yanks won 10-3. The Dodgers got the first HR by Ohtani but that was it. The Brewers took the W 3-1. The Rangers put up 13 runs to beat the Angels by 12 runs. The Giants had a walk off 3-run in-the-park HR to beat the Phillies 4-3. The Tigers won their 5th straight after beating the Rays 4-2. That streak would end the next day and they would lose the next 4.
- The Phillies also put up 13 runs to beat the Giants who went scoreless. Miami had an 11-game road win streak that came to a close on Wed with their loss to the Reds 7-2 in Cinci. Another very weird streak but the Braves beat the A’s thanks to Acuna’s 2 HRs. That ended their 13 game losing streak in California.
-
- The Dodgers lost 7 in a row and got swept by the Astros and Brewers before finally winning the next two to the Giants. Crow-Armstrong hit 2 HRs for the Cubs to top the Twins 8-1. That denied the sweep. The Mariners kept the Yanks hitless all the way until the 8th winning but allowing 6 hits and that translated to 6 runs. NY would end up beating the mariners in extra innings. The A’s beat the Braves in 11 innings for the longest game of the week.
- The Blue Jays won 10 in a row before losing one to the White Sox 2-1 on Thursday and then 2 games to the A’s to end the week. The Guardians/White Sox had a double header on Thursday. The Guardians won the first one by 2. The next would also go to 11 innings where Chicago would win by 1. Mariners Cal Raleigh hit the 37th and 38th HRs during the game against the Tigers on Friday. He is now just 1 HR away from Barry Bonds; record in 2001.
- On Saturday, the mariners put up the most runs of the week with 15 over the Tigers. The Astros beat the Rangers by 1 in the Texas duel in extra innings. They needed 11 to get a result. The next day, the Rangers would get revenge, winning 5-1. They have split the series so far.
- The Red Sox won 10 straight games after sweeping the Nationals, Rockies and Rays. All the Rays games were close with 3 games being decided by 1. The Brewers end the week on their 7th win that will continue into next week. They swept the Dodgers and the Nationals.
- MLB Draft: The Nationals had the #1 draft pick and selected 17-year old from Oklahoma. His dad was in Angels for 6 seasons. Eli Willits is the youngest player ever to be drafted by the MLB. Matt Holliday’s son, Ethan, was selected to his dad’s team back in 1998 – the Rockies.
Basketball-NBA:
- NBA contracts keep rolling in:
- Suns signed Devin Booker to a new contract which is the most annual salary ever in the NBA. That record was just set 8 days prior by SGA’s contract. His $145MM contract is for 2 years.
- Chet Holmgren (OKC) got a new contract for $250MM for 5 years
- Jalen Williams (OKC) also got a contract for 5 years for $287MM.
Golf:
- It was a good weekend for the Americans. At the Genesis Scottish open, Chris Gotterup beat the field with an impressive 61 in the 2nd He came back to the field a bit during the 3rd round, finishing with a 70 but he rallied on the final day. He would win over Rory McIlroy and Marco Penge, the Englishmen by 2 shots.
- The LIV golf tour was in Andalucia this week and yet the favorite ESP, Jon Rahm fell to the American Talor Gooch. Rahm shot a 65 final round to get within 1 but it wasn’t enough.
Olympic Sports:
- Tour de France: Pogacar won stage 4 in a sprint. This was his 100th career win! He did not win the latest stage (9) but he is still wearing the yellow jersey.
- Team USA Hall of Fame just got bigger this week.
- Allyson Felix, four-time Olympic champion Serena Williams, three-time Olympic champion Kerri Walsh Jennings and 2012 all-around gymnastics champion Gabby Douglas. Also inducted Saturday were Bode Miller, Mike Krzyzewski, Phil Knight, Steve Cash, Susan Hagel, Flo Hyman and Marla Runyan, along with the 2010 four-man bobsled team and the 2004 women’s wheelchair basketball team.
Tennis:
- Oh has the Wimbledon started and it is keeping us on our toes. In a year where the most Americans have made the tournament (35 – the most since 1999), 23 seeded players went down in the first round.
- On the Men’s side: Dimitrov was beating #1 Sinner in the first two sets before he had to medically retire. That was basically it, Sinner made it to the final by winning the next two matches in straight sets. Carlos Alcaraz beat the remaining American Taylor Fritz. Two of those sets went to extra games but the Spaniard won out. It was #1 vs #2 in the men’s final, defending champ ESP Carlos Alcaraz and ITA Janik Sinner. They exchanged the first two sets but after that Sinner dominated 6-4 for the next two sets to win his first Wimbledon. Before this final, Alcaraz was 5-0 in major finals and a 24 match unbeaten streak until Sunday.
-
- On the Women’s: #13 USA Anisimova upset #1 Sabalenka. It was a great match too with alternating sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. #19 RUS Samsnova put up the best fight against Iga for this week but she still won in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. It looked inevitable and #8 Iga Swiatek completely crushed #13 Anisomova in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. First time since 1911 that a player has not won a game in the final and Iga is now 6-0 in major finals.
