Weekly Update July 21, 2025

Weekly Update

Baseball: HR Derby. All Star Game. Rest of week games.

Basketball: WNBA All-Star Game.

Golf: Open Championship. Clark and Horvath.

Olympic Sports: TdF. Some Track and GYM. ESPYs.

Baseball – MLB:

  • HR derby: Cal Raleigh won the HR derby which is fitting after he leads the league this year. He almost didn’t make it out of round 1 after he tied but his longest HR in one inch further. Ultimately he won by 3. Cal is the first catcher and switch hitter to win and his dad was the one pitching to him.
  • All Star Game: The All-Star game was this week. The National League went up early, up 2-0 in the 1st and even more 6-0 in the 6th. Then the American came back to tie it up in the last 3 innings. For the first time ever, the game went to what would’ve been extra innings. On the final out of the game, the league came back to tie up. Then, instead of extra innings, the All-Star game goes to a mini home run Derby. Kyle Schwarber from the Phillies went three home runs and three pitches to win for his league.
  • This week’s games:
    • The Red Sox were on a real streak prior to the ASG. The Cubs upset their 10 game winning streak on Thursday by winning 4-1. Padres Machado got a grand slam in the 9th inning to have SD pass Nationals with 5 runs in the final inning to win 7-2.
    • The Blue Jays beat the Giants 6-3 and keep their home winning streak alive, and sitting at 9. It would be 10 by the end of the week. The Tigers lost 6 games in a row which is impressed for the MLB leading team. They would win the final game in the series over the Rangers to avoid the sweep.
    • The Brewers escaped the week with 10 wins. And I say escape because the Dodgers tried and got close in their 3 games. Milwaukee would beat LA 2-0, 8-7 and 6-5.

Basketball:

  • WNBA All Star Game: WNBA players wore shirts that said ‘pay us what you owe us’. The game was ok. Team Collier dominated early, outscoring Team Clark by 22 at half. Caitlin Clark didn’t get to play as she was injured. But the 4 point shot was back.

Golf:

  • If you watched Scottie Scheffler’s press conference on Tuesday, you would not be surprised to learn that he won the Open. He talked about how golf does not give him ultimate fulfillment in life. It was a very thought provoking answer. Scottie then shot a 64 during the 2nd The cut was at +1. Scottie took a commanding lead heading into the final round leading by 4. He would ultimately win by that much as well over Harris English. He has now won 4th major of his career. He finished top 10 in ever major this year (4th at Masters, Won PGA, T7 at US Open and won Open). He now just needs to the US Open to complete the career slam.
  • Wyndham Clark banned from Oakmont after he wrecked the lockers after he played badly. He has to make contribution to donation of boards choice, pay for damages and has to take an anger management counseling. In 2032, the US Open will be there so TBD if he finishes all of these requirements or says screw it.
  • Horvath turned down pga tour event because wouldn’t let him film there. He is a famous YouTuber.

Olympic Sports:

  • Tour de France: Tim Wellens, the teammate of Pogacar won the latest stage (15). But Pogacar is slowly pulling away with the yellow jersey. Pogacar won his 21st stage win during the time trial 13th A Ineos Grenadiers car hit a spectator who was allegedly holding a cell phone.
  • US Classic was this weekend. Claire Pease won the women’s all-around by .4 over Simone Rose after winning the Vault. Joscelyn Roberson got 3rd and Hezly Riveria was all the way down in 12th. She took a fall on the uneven bars on her dismount.

  • Noah Lyles dropped a 100m race to JAM Oblique Seville at the Diamond League in London this weekend. That is very unsual and it wasn’t close as Seville ran 9.86 while Lyles was at 10.
  • The ESPYs were this week.
    • Simone Biles All Around was the best championship performance and best athlete (w). Saquon Barkley’s backwards hurdle was the best play. SGA won the best male athlete and NBA player.
