Baseball – MLB:

  • This week’s headlines:
    • Strong P game on Monday. Phillies P Zack Wheeler got 10 Ks in 8 innings which led to the Phillies 4-0 shutout of the Padres. Pirates P (no not Skenes) Heaney got a no-hitter to the 6th The Cardinals did manage to get 4 hits after that but they would still be shutout 7-0. The DBacks stopped their losing streak at 4 with a 4-2 win over the Giants. Wilyer Breau did a grand slam and an inside-the-park HR in Boston’s 13-6 win over the Reds. The Orioles needed extra innigs to upset the Rangers but when we hit the 11th inning, Baltimore put up 4! I had to triple check that this went to extras with a scrore like that.
    • The A’s got a big extra-innings win over the Rays who have now lost their 3rd The 36-52 A’s beat the 47-39 Rays. The Marlins won their 8th game in a row on Tuesday. They upset the Twins 2-0. They would just be 1 game shy of their club record and they would fall short the next night, losing to the Twins.
    • It was the day of doubleheaders on Wed! The Padres and Phillies split their doubleheaders on Wed. The Padres won the first wone with many thanks to P Pivetta in his 9th win of the season. The Phillies would win the next one 5-1. The Tigers crushed the Nationals 11-2 including Riley Greene’s 2 3-run HRs. The Nationals would fight back with a 9-4 win later in the day. The Brewers hit a grand slam in the 6th to win Game 1 7-2. But the Mets would win Game 2 7-3. Almost literally turn about is fair play (just off by 1 run). Clayton Kershaw hit the milestone 3K Ks in the Dodgers narrow 1 run win over the White Sox that night.

    • Nationals player James Wood had 5 of their team’s 15 hits – a career high. They would beat the Tigers by 3. The Pirates swept the Cardinals after sweeping the Mets last week to get to 6 straight wins. But that is where their luck ran out. Then they ran into the Mariners who swept them (and kept them runless) – Yikes!
    • There were 30 teams in action on July 4th – fitting for America’s pastime. Cal Raleigh hit the 34th and 35th HR of the season during their Friday July 4th win over the Pirates. That matched Mariners great Ken Griffey Jr’s record of HRs before the All-Star break. The Red Sox had a 7-run 5th inning to beat the Nationals 11-2 on Friday. The Cubs hit a club record 8 HRs in their 11-3 victory over the Cardinals.
    • The highest scoring team of the week was the Astros with 18 runs scored to the Dodger’s lowly 1 run. The Red Sox won their 10,000th win in franchise history on Saturday over the nationals.
    • The Mets got the better of the Yankees in the Subway series this year. They would win game 1 by 1 in a close one. Game 2 was not with a 12-6 win. The Yanks avoided the sweep by winnings Sunday’s game 6-4. The Guardians ended the week with 10 straight losses, including sweeps by the Cardinals, Cubs and Tigers. On the flip side of that, the Blue Jays have won 8 in a row with sweeps of the Yankees and Angels. Those streaks will now continue into next week!

Basketball-NBA:

  • SGA will stay in OKC for a long time. He signed a $240MM contract to remain apart of the Thunder for the next 4 years.
  • Some details have surfaced about the deal that got Kevin Durant to Houston for the Rockets. Turns out it was part of a 7-team trade deal, the first in NBA history.
  • In the Summer league, last second heaves will not count towards player’s stats – Finally!
  • WNBA is expanding! There will be new teams in Cleveland, Detroit and Phili.
  • WNBA All-Star line up is set. Paige Bueckers is the only rookie on the starting roster.

Golf:

  • Remember Potegiger, our winner from last week, well he continued that momentum into this week with 2 eagles in the first round at the John Deere. But that was it, he tumbled down the leaderboard on Saturday, shooting +5 and he eventually WD. At the beginning of the final day, the entire first page was tied for the lead and it was pouring. Brian Campbell has had a either win of bust year. He has won twice now this season and other than that outside the top 30 in every other tournament. He finished the final round with a -4 to tie it up and take the tournament to a playoff. Emiliano Grillo also closed with a -4. He took the lead from Campbell when Brian made a double bogey but then he bogeyed the next hole. It was like that all day.

Olympic Sports:

  • It was the Prefontaine Classic this weekend. KEN Faith Kipyegeon set the WR in the 1500m with a time of 3:48.68, besting her own time by almost .5. Seems like that training to break 4-minutes did some good. Fellow KEN Beatrice Chebet set the WR in the 5K, becoming the first woman to break 14 minutes. The previous WR was also set at the Pre back in 2023 and was more than 2 seconds slower.
  • The Tour de France has started and the first stage had an unexpected winner. Jasper Philipsen won the opening stage, which is his 10th stage win over defending champ Tadej Pogacar.

Tennis:

  • Oh has the Wimbledon started and it is keeping us on our toes. In a year where the most Americans have made the tournament (35 – the most since 1999), 23 seeded players went down in the first round.
    • On the Men’s side: You will notice a lot of names missing like Rune, Medvedev Musetti and Zerev all went down in the first round. Taifoe went down in Round 2 as did #4 Draper and #19 USA Paul. It might be faster to tell you the rankings that are still alive. #1 Sinner will take on #10 Blake Shelton in the Quarterfinal. #6 Djokovic is in and is scheduled to play #22 Conolli. #5 Fritz is also still in. he will play #17 Khachanov and #2 Alcaraz will play GBR Norrie.
    • On the Women’s side: Even smaller ranked numbers on the women’s side. Coco Gauff went out in straight sets in round 1 – embarrassing. She mentioned not having enough time after her recent win. #9 ESP Badosa, #5 CHN Zheng, and #3 Jessica Pegula all went down in round 1. Anisimova is the final USA standing after Navarro lost to Andreeva. #1 Sabalenka will play GER Siegemund. #13 USA Anisimova will play Pavyuchenkova. #7 RUS Andreeva will play SUI Bencic and #8 Swaitek will play #19 Samsonova.

Quick Highlights:

  • NFL: TE Darren Waller is coming out of retirement to join the Dolphins. Waller retired in 2023 after being traded to the Giants but was one of the best tight ends in 2019 and 2020.

  • NCAA: Texas St has joined the Pac 12. If you cant name the Pac 12 teams now, just remember they all have state in them: Oregon St, Wash St, Boise St, Colorado St, Frenso St, SD St, Utah St, Texas St and Gonzaga (MBB only).
  • NHL: NHL players have been given the green light that they can compete in the Olympics next year.
  • F1: Lando Norris won the British GP but that wasn’t the big news from the race. Nico Hulkenberg got his first podium in his 14 year career with his 3rd place finish

  • LAX: PLL recorded the fastest goal ever at 123mph.
