Quick Highlights: Tennis. Horseracing. Football. F1.
Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- The Pirates are starting to bounce back, winning their fourth straight game on Monday over the Marlins 10-3. That’s the longest win streak of the season for them. They would lose their next game but at least its looking up! On the flip side of that, the Braves won their game 7-1 over the Brewers to break their 7 game losing streak. 4 games went into extra innings on Monday! I wont touch on all of them but the Dodgers got the 1 run win over their in-state rival, the Padres. The DBacks hits a grand slam to win in the 11th over the Mariners.
- The Phillies taking a turn for the worst. They lost to the Cubs 8-4 Tuesday for their 10th loss in the last 12 games! They still sit at over .500 but this part of the season is not going well. The Giants scored 4 runs in the 9th inning to come back and win over the Rockies 6-5. That is their 6th straight 1-run win!
- They would break that streak the next game, winning by 3. That would be the Giants 7th straight win. They would drop the last game to the Rockies in the series by 1 run to break that streak.
- The Rangers crushed the Twins on Thursday, winning 16-3. Other than that game (and the 6-run win of the Brewers over the Cardinals) Thursday was a day of close games. 5 games were won by 1 run!
- On Saturday, the Reds beat the Tigers 11-1 which is the worse loss in a year for Detroit. Other than that game, it was more close games than blow outs. There were 9 games that were decided by 1 run (of 15 games total).
- The Reds would beat the Tigers again the next day. Odd since Cinci is only just now at .500 with these two wins. The Rockies also had an upset of the Braves! They would beat ATL 10-1.
Baseball/Softball – NCAA:
- Going back to the WCWS. Texas won game 1 with NiJaree Canady pitching. It was a close one 2-1. Texas Tech came back in Game 2 though to win by 1 but that score looked closer than it was. Texas had a decent amount of in-field errors and just not great plays to give the Red Raiders that game. Game 3 was all Texas though. They jumped up early and held on to the lead 10-4 to win their first WCWS.
- It was the most watched WCWS ever with 1.3M viewers, up 24% from last year.
- Super Regionals:
- #13 Coastal Carolina upset #4 Auburn in just 2 games at their Super Regional.
- Duke beat Murray St 7-4 in game 1 but game 2, the Racers came back with a vengeance. Murray St put up 19 runs to win by 10. Game 3 was much closer but the Racers upset the Blue Devils by 1 to go to their first CWS.
- #5 UNC crushed Arizona 18-2 in Game 1. But after that, Arizona won the next two by only 3 runs. Arizona advanced.
- #3 Arkansas, #6 LSU, #8 Oregon St, #15 UCLA, Louisville all advanced as they were supposed to although there were a couple of close calls (game 3s needed).
- So UCLA, Murray St, Arkansas, LSU, Louisville, Arizona, Oregon St and Coastal Carolina are in the CWS!
- Coastal Carolina beat Arizona by 3 to start the tournament. Oregon St walked it off to beat Louisville by 1. Murray St’s Cinderella run would be put in danger as they lost to UCLA by 2. LSU also beat Arkansas 4-1 to wrap up the first round. In Elimination games on Sunday, Louisville would send Arizona home 8-3. Coastal Carolina would beat Oregon State 6-2 to continue in the winner’s bracket.

Basketball-NBA:
- NBA Finals:
- Game 1 was all Thunder until the 2H when Indiana made a comeback. They took the first lead of the game with .4 seconds left on the clock and that would be all they needed. Pacers steal game 1 by 1 in OKC.
- Game 2 was all Thunder and they managed to finish it out this time. Thunder win big at home 123-107.
- Game 3 was in Indy and the home crowd helps! OKC took the lead after 1Q but the Pacers went off in the 2nd, putting up 40. That was enough to have the lead going into the locker room and then the Thunder fell apart in the 4th scoring only 18. That let the Pacers take the series lead 2-1.
- Game 4 was awesome and close the entire time! Each Q was only separated by 3 points in the first 3 Qs. That being said, the Pacers did win the points battle in those 3 Qs but they would shiz the bed in the final Q, only putting up 18 points. they missed so many free throws in the final minuets of the game and that ultimately let the Thunder back in. OKC evens the series heading back to OKC.
Golf:
- It was Father’s Day so you know what that means in the golf world… its US Open weekend! This year was the 125th and it was played at Oakmont. Man did these PGA Tour golfers look like those mere mortals of us that usually play golf. At the beginning of the week, Patrick Reed had an albatross. It was the first one at US Open since 2012 and only fourth all time. After the cut, only 3 people under par and the cut was +5 or so. That was the theme. Sam Burns led going into the final round and was partnered with Adam Scott. But both men would fall apart on the final round especially after the weather delay. Burn was actually denied relief after his ball went into the water on 15 (when he was just 1 off the lead). When I say water, I mean casual rainfall collected water but he was denied. That would lead to a double bogey on that hole and +8 for the day! JJ Spaun’s day didn’t start well with 5 of 6 bogeys to start but after the weather, he came back swinging. He would birdie the 17th to take the solo lead and would just need to 2 putt to win on 18. He would nail it in 1 that was 64 feet long. This is his first major and only his 2nd on the PGA tour. His only other win was the 2022 Valero Texas Open. His two daughters were in attendance too.
Hockey:
- Stanley Cup Finals: Oilers vs Panthers.
- Game 1 was close! The Oilers took 1 goal every period to tie it up and go to OT. The Oilers would score in the final 31 seconds of the 1OT.
- Game 2 was similar. The Oilers put up 3 in the 1st, the Panthers scored 2 in both the 1st and 2nd. The Oilers tied it up in the final 18 seconds to go to OT! No result in the first. The 2OT, the Panthers scored to tie up the series.
- Game 3 was all Panthers. They scored 2 goals in each period and the Oilers only managed to score 1.
- Game 4 we went back to OT. FL put up 3 in the first, Edmonton returned the favor in the 2nd. The Oilers scored with 7ish left and looked like they would win outright but as we have seen in this series, drama. Panthers scored in the final 20 seconds to take it to OT. But the Oilers would get the W with a goal to tie the series up!
- The Panthers put up 3 unanswered goals in Game 4 before the Oilers would get their first. They would manage to score 2 in the final P but to the Panthers 3. FL wins this one 5-2 and takes the series lead 3-2 heading back to Florida.
Olympic Sports:
- T&F Championships: on the men’s side we had a close one. So close we had co-champions. Texas A&M and USC would split the title. USC and Texas A&M shared the team title with 41 points! Arkansas gets 3rd with 40. The Aggie men weren’t even in the top 8 in the team standings through 14 events (of 21). It all came down to the 4×4. Texas A&M got 2nd at the line and USC only managed 8th (1 point). That put them as tied!! USC didn’t win any event. On the women’s side, Georgia dominated knowing they would win going into the final event thanks mostly due to their success in the field events. They would hit the 60+ points mark.
- Some notable performances. The M 1500m, Washington wins their 3rd straight title in the event and every single runner in the final came across the line in 3:47 – all 10 of them! The men were into lane 4 crossing the line. Talk about a close race.
- Hana Moll broke her own sisters PV NCAA record at 15’8.5
- Michigan Senior Savannah Sutherland broke Sydney McLaughlin’s 400h record! She won by 25 meters – no one else was in the picture.
- Alabama’s Doris Lemngole became the 11th fastest steeple ever run ever (not just in the NCAA). She is the first NCAA woman to run sub-9 in the steeple and set the WL time.
- T&F: Sticking with T&F for a sec. Grand Slam Track has cancelled their final meet of the inaugural season in LA. This is not good news for LA who also had USATF take the LA Grand Prix off the track calendar as well. No reasoning was given but it doesn’t bode well for the future Olympic stadium in 2028.
- T&F: Nico Young broke the US record in the M 5K at the Diamond League in Oslo.
- Swimming: CAN Summer McIntosh broke 3 WRs in a week. She broke her own 400m IM, winning the event at the Canadian trials by 12 seconds over the next swimmer. Before that she broke the 200m IM and breaking the WR in the 400m Free by 2 seconds. 2 other CAN records also went down at her hands. Worlds is next month in Singapore and I’d say she looks like she is peaking at the right time.
- Skiing: World Cup skiing is set to increase their prize money next year by 10%.
- NCAA: The House Settlement has passed. So what does that mean? Couple of things. The NCAA will pay out $2.8Bn in ‘damages’ to athletes who competed in NCAA sports from 2016 to Sept last year where NIL was denied. This includes players like Joe Burrow, Baker Mayfield and Zion Williamson. It also means that schools can now pay athletes directly in revenue sharing. However each school that opts into the House settlement will be capped at $20.5MM for the first year. There will be a new governing body, the College Sports Commission that will oversee a lot of these changes. Also now all NIL deals must go through a 3rd party platform called NIL Go run by Deloitte to determine if the NIL deal is ‘real NIL’ or should be part of the revenue sharing cap. The House settlement is being challenged as it violates Title IX (saying men and women should be equal in money).
Some quick highlights:
- Tennis: Circling back to the French Open after missing the post last week. On the men’s side, the final was a close battle of the top 2 players. #1 ITA Sinner took the first 2 sets but #2 ESP Alcaraz would win the next 3. 3 of the 5 sets went to tie breakers including the final 2. Alcaraz successfully defends his French open title. It was a similar result on the women’s side. #2 Coco Gauff beat #1 BLR Sabalenka in 3 sets. The first went into tie breakers and Sabalekna took it but then Coco would win the next 2. This is Gauff’s first French Open title and 2nd Grand Slam. She is the first American to win the French Open since Serena took her third back in 2015.
- Horseracing: Sovereignty won the Belmont Stakes, taking 2 of the 3 races in the Triple Crown. Remember he won the Kentucky Derby but skipped the Preakness.
- Football: It was the 2025 UFL Championship this weekend. The DC Defenders played the Michigan Panthers on Saturday for the title. Although Michigan led early, the DC Defenders outscored the Panthers 31-6 in the 2Q. Final score was 58-34, which is the first time the UFL had hit the half-hundred mark.
- F1: George Russell barely edged out Max Verstappen in the Pirelli CAN GP with only a .224 second gap after 70 laps. Russell had dominated the weekend leading Free Practice 2 and Qualifying thent the race.
