Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- Many Machado scored the tying HR for the Padres in the 8th inning to avoid the Marlins upset. Then they would get the winning run in the 11th to finish them off. The Dbacks broke their 5 game losing streak with a won over the Pirates on Monday. Not only did they won but they also shut them out 5-0. After that game though Arizona would lose the next 4 until a win on Sunday. The game on Sat against the Nationals, Washington had a 10 run 1st
- Dodgers star Shoehei Ohtani hit the league’s top # of HRs with 20 in their 9-3 win over the Guardians on tues. The Rays had won 6 games in a row before they met with the Twins on Tues. Roger Clemens’ son Kody hit a HR in front of his dad to help his team win 4-2. Lots of 4s in this next one. Brewers star Christian Yelich hit his first walk off HR and it was a grand slam to win in the 10th inning over the Red Sox. Havent heard from him in a while. The Cubs neeed extra innings to beat the Rockies who have now lost their 21st consecutive series. Pete Alonso and Jared Young both hit HRs in the 4-run 1st inning to beat the White Sox 6-4 to win their 4th game in a row. They would drop the game to Chicago the very next day 9-4. They then won their next 3 games so the Mets are looking strong right now.
- The Braves and Phillies had a double header on Thurs and they split the games. The Phillies won the 1st one 5-4 without Bryce Harper btw. Then the Braves won their second 9-3 with an impressive P outting by Chris Sale who hit his 2,500 K of his career. The Blue Jays had 18 hits resulting in 12 runs in their 12-0 shutout of the A’s. 8 runs came in the 2nd The Nationals needed extra inning to beat the Mariners but man they went off in the 10th, scoring 6 runs to win 9-3.
- The Cubs won 4 games in a row before losing to the Reds 6-2 on Friday. Then they would go on to win another 2 games. The Dodgers beat the Yankees 8-5 on Friday to make both teams have 35 wins on the season.
- It was a high scoring day on Saturday. The Rays tried to be the most runs in the week with 16 but would get topped later that day. The Brewers had 17 runs, 23 hits over the Phillies 17-7. Phili would also lose to Milwaukee on Sunday as well to get swept in that series and hand the Phillies their 4th straight loss. The Dodgers would top even that with 18 runs on the Yankees – now that is an accomplishment. Talk about a dream debut, Cole Young hit a RBI in the 11th inning to get the walk off win for his team, the Mariners.
- The Yankees would take their game over the Dodgers on Sunday 7-3 to avoid the sweep. The Mariners Cal Raleigh now has the league lead in HRs with his 23rd in their 1 run win over the Twins on Sunday. The A’s have lost 6 games in a row and only beat the Phillies on May 25 and the Dodgers back on May 14th.
Baseball/Softball – NCAA:
Baseball:
- Regionals: sooooo many upsets. Only 6 teams made it out of their Regional unscathed. #3 Duke, #3 Arkansas, #4 Auburn, #9 Florida St, #13 Coastal Carolina, #15 UCLA all advanced from their Regionals as expected. The others either got bounced or have an elimination game today.
- Oh do we have flashbacks to the Softball Regionals. Because once again the #1 ranked team is out! Vanderbilt got eliminated in their own Regional as they lost to Louisville on Saturday and then lost to WRIGHT STATE on Sunday (both games were by 1). Louisville would get the better of Wright State in the final game though to advance.
- Not only #1 but also #2 got bounced! Texas hosted UTSA, K St and Houston Christian. UTSA never lost a game and their closest game was against the #2 team 7-4 to send the longhorns home early!
- Clemson was sent home before the final game of their regional as well. They would win game 1 over USC Upstate 7-3 but would lose to WV by 3 and then again to Kentucky badly! The Wildcats won 16-4! West Virginia would also sent home Kentucky on Sunday to advance.
- #12 Oregon did not have a good regional. They lost their first two games to be the first time out in Eugene! Arizona was the team to emerge from this region and advance!
Monday games:
- #5 UNC is in trouble. The Tar Heels made easy work of Oklahoma the first time (11-5) but they played again on Sunday and the Sooners got the better of them this time. Now the teams head to winner-take-all game 3 on Monday.
- #7 LSU should have advanced no problem from their region. They had Arkansas Little Rock, DBU and Rhode Island to compete against. But they still managed to lose to Little Rock Sunday night (10-4) so now they will play on Monday to stay alive.
- #16 Southern Miss put themselves in a hole from the jump by losing to Columbia (11-4) so they now had to go through the loser side of the regional. They barely beat Bama in an elim game Sat, got revenge on Columbia (8-1) on Sunday. Then all they have to do is beat Miami twice. They did manage to do it once Sunday (17-6) so now there will be a winner-take-all game Monday!
- Similar situation for #8 Oregon State who lost to Saint Marys (um why) in round 1. They also had USC and TCU in their region so it was a tough one in Corvallis. Oregon St eliminated TCU first then St. Marys (20-3). Then they crushed USC last night (14-1) and only have to win one more time to take their region.
- #10 Ole Miss lost their first game to Murray St 9-6. But maybe I shouldn’t be surprised as they also beat GT 13-11. But they would finally lose to Ole Miss (19-8) on Sunday night. That will force a Monday game.
Softball:
- WCWS has begun and its been insane!
- Day 1: #6 Texas upset #3 Florida who just couldn’t get a run around the bases. Defending 4x champ #2 Oklahoma was trailing #7 Tennessee by 2 in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs. Things looked bad before Ella Parker hit a walk-off HR with 2 Sooners on base to crush the Vols dreams. #12 Texas Tech got their first WCWS win in their debut winning 1-0 over Ole Miss. Drama in game 4. #9 UCLA was leading 2-1 in the final inning. Oregon would get a run across after an obstruction call was given to UCLA, letting the tying run stand. Looked like we would go to extra innings but then with 2 outs, UCLA gets a HR just over the fence to win by 2.
-
- Day 2 was elimination day. Florida’s batting struggles continued. Tennesse would win this game easily 11-3. Ole Miss/Oregon went into extra innings as well and with both picthers pitching all game! But the poor pitcher, in the 10th inning, gave up a walk with bases loaded to send her team home. Not only that but she is a senior so that is how her career ends. My heart hurts for her!
-
- Day 3: Texas hadnt beaten Oklahoma in Oklahoma (or OKC) since 2014! Until May 31st. The Sooners left so many batters stranded on base and it showed. Texas wins 4-2. Texas Tech put away UCLA with their star pitcher NiJaree Canady. She had 7 Ks in their win.
-
- Day 4 (elimination day): Tennessee led by 2 runs in the 7th inning until they let a 2 HR tie up the game with a hint of controversy. The batter did not touch home plate when she ran the bases. Apparently that doesn’t matter. She did go back and touch it at the prompting of her teammates. That play is techically ruled not reviewable so it was upheld. So they headed to extra innings. Both teams would scare the other leaving runners on base but ultimately the Lady Vols won with a run in the 9th. In an elimination game of Oregon/Oklahoma, the only senior on the Sooner roster Cydney Sanders hit 2 HRs along with Isabelle Emerling to beat the Ducks 4-1.
Basketball-NBA:
- West Conference Finals: The Thunder MVP SGA went off and finally looked like himself for the first time in this series in Game 4. He had 40 points. Thank goodness because the bench for OKC got outscored 64-27. This game was much closer than the others. The Thunder won both Qs in the 1H and the Timberwolves came back but it wasn’t enough even with a 41 point 4Q. OKC hangs on to win by 2. OKC 3-1. Oh and Game 5 was where OKC pull the nail in the coffin and it started early. MN only had the lead at 3-0 and then they only scored 9 points in the 1Q – 9!! They would score more and more in every Q following ending with 32 but the Thunder crushed them in this one 124-94.
- East Conference Final: The Pacers/Knicks scored a lot of points in the 1Q, it was 43-35. Every Q was won by alternating teams so this was a decently close game. The Pacers would take the W 130-121. The Knicks would give their home crowd an easy win, winning every Q in game 5 to make the series 3-2 and give MSG hope. That hope was squashed when the teams went back to Indiana on Saturday. The Pacers turned the tables and won every Q to kill the Knicks 125-108. Pacers advance!
Golf:
- Ben Griffin continued to play well after last week at the Memorial this weekend. He shot a -7 and that was after hitting 2 balls into the water! He led by 2 over some big names, Colin Morikawa and Max Homa. Ben was still tied for the lead going into the weekend but then defending champ, Scottie Scheffler came into play. He had 13 pars before crushing the final 5 holes with 4 birdies to take the lead by 1 over Griffin. Scottie would successfully defend his title with a win by 4 strokes. He has now won 3 of his last 4 starts on the PGA Tour!
Hockey:
- East Conference finals: It felt like hell froze over on Monday when the Hurricanes beat the Panthers 3-0 to make the series 3-1. Don’t worry things went back to normal on Wed. The Hurricanes did score first with 2 in the 1P but then Florida had enough playing with their food. They would take the series in Game 5 5-3.
- West Conference Finals: The Oilers took the 3-1 series lead with a 4-1 game. They would put Dallas away on Thursday easily. Dallas would score 1 in each P but the Oilers had 3 in the 1P alone. Edmonton would win 6-3.
Olympic Sports:
- Swimming: Breaststroker Lily King has annoucned that she will retire at the end of the 2025 season in her hometown of Indy.
- T&F: the Athlos League will be launching a team based track and field league. Some big names have been named as advisor-owners of the league: Sha’Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas and Tara Davis-Woodhall.
- GYM: Mary Lou Retton got arrested and charged with a DUI this weeked. She failed a sobreity test and was driving errastically when police pulled her over.
Tennis:
- On the men’s side: round 1 had a huge upset in Medvedev going down to unranked GBR Norrie in 5 sets! He lost the first two and managed to tie it up but Norrie would hold on. Norrie will play Djokovic the 4th round tomorrow. #1 ITA Sinner, #5 GBR Draper and #3 GER Zverev are all still alive and in the 4th #15 USA Tiafoe and Korda met up in the 3rd round but Taifoe advanced of the two Americans. He played GER Altmaier who beat #4 Fritz in the 1st round and upset the American in 4 sets. Tiafoe avenged his countrymen to advance to the Quarterfinals in straight sets. #7 Ruud was upset in the 2nd round. #12 USA Paul will face #2 ESP Carlos Alcaraz. Carlos beat #13 USA Shelton in a tough match on Sunday. The first set went to tie breakers 6^8 – 7^10.
- A lot less upsets on the women’s side. #1 BLR Sabalenka beat #16 USA Anisimova to get to the Quarterfinals. She will play CHN Zheng on Wed. #5 POL Iga Swiatek dropped the first set in the 4th round to #12 UZB Rybakina 1-6 but then rallied to win and make the Quarterfinals and is tied for the 3rd longest win streak in open era. She will play #13 UKR Svitolina (who beat #4 ITA Paolini) to make her Quarter. On the other side of the bracket, we have 2 unranked players who have made the 4th Some upsets from earlier on that side, #9 USA Navarro had to withdraw against her oppoent in the 1st round. That paved the way for USA Baptiste to make a Quarter. She will have to play #7 USA Madison Keys though. USA Parks upset #14 CZE Muchova in round 1 but then fell in round 2. It was an all French 3rd round in that side to come up with Boisson who will play #3 USA Jessica Pegula. We have 4 Americans on that side of the bracket with Coco Gauff also making it. She will play #20 RUS Alexandrova.
Some quick highlights:
- F1: Oscar Piastri won the Spanish GP.
- Baseball: LSU Shreveport finished their season a perfect 59-0 to win the national championship.
