Baseball – MLB:

  • This week’s headlines:
    • The Phillies are starting to turn it back around with a nice game Monday 5-2 over the Marlins. They led off with a HR. The Rockies got their 15th win of the season that same day and in clutch fashion, with 2 HRs in the 9th to win by 2. Ohtani made his pitching debut and did not get the W but his team did 6-3. The Yankees took the Angels to extra innings but would still take the 1-run loss. That was their 4th They would add 2 more before breaking it on the final game to LA to avoid the sweep. At one point they had 30 innings with 0 runs scored! That would be broken on Wed.
    • The Rockies would beat the Nationals again on Tuesday with a franchise tying record of 7 HRs. The Blue Jays got back to back HRs in the 9th to win by 1 over the DBacks. The Redgot their 4th win in a row and 2nd over the Twins. MN would break that streak the next day handing them a 12-5 loss. They would lose the next 2 games as well. The Red Sox had won 6 in a row before running into the Mariners in their 2nd game of the series. Seattle would shut them out 8-0 to break their streak.
    • The Rockies beat the Nationals again on Wed, 3-1. That is also the 11th loss for the Nationals. They would win the last game in the series to avoid the sweep. The Rays overcame an 8-run deficit to the Orioles 12-8. That is the largest comeback of the MLB season so far. We also had 3 games postponed that day.
    • The Braves sweep the Mets in their final game of the series on Thursday. They would lose 7 games before finally winning over the Phillies.

    • The White Sox lost 7 in a row before they would win over the Blue Jays 7-1 on Friday. The Brewers put up 17 runs in their win over the Twins 17-6. The Dbacks scored 14 to win by 6 over the Rockies.
    • The Mariners scored 14 runs off 18 hits in their win over the Cubs on Sunday. They would win by 8.
  •  Standings:
    • In the AL, the Tigers are in the top spot with 49 wins over the Yankees and Astros with 45. The bottom of the conference is the White Sox with 25 wins.
    • In the NL, the Dodgers are only .5 wins ahead of the Phillies with 47. The Cubs and Mets are both at 46 so it is crowded at the top. The bottom is not, with the Rockies sitting at 18 wins now.

Baseball/Softball – NCAA:

  • Finishing up the CWS before the final:
    • Arkansas sent Murray St home on Monday by shutting them out 3-0.
    • On Tuesday, LSU scored 9 over UCLA who only put up 5 for UCLA’s first loss. Louisville/Oregon St had a back and forth game. It was 4-6 Louisville in the 9th. But Oregon State went on a tear. The Beavs had bases loaded with no outs when there was an error in the infield to tie it up! But they still left 2 on in scoring position (2nd and 3rd). that would come back to haunt them. The Beavs then had an infield errors to let Louisville load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 9th. But a sacrificial fly lets Louisville live on to fight another day. Arkansas would hand UCLA their 2rd loss of the tournament (and day) in the final game of the day 7-3.

    • Wednesday, the final day, Coastal Carolina dominated Louisville 11-3 to advance to the final! Then the last game of LSU/Arkansas got crazy! LSU was losing til the 6th when they put up 2. Headed into the 8th, LSU was up 2-1. LSU’s 1B dropped a potential double play to let Arkansas back in it, 3-2. Then LSU hit a HR to tie it up into the 9th. Arkansas hit a couple of doubles to look like they would have the win in the bag, up 2 and a K to start the bottom of the 9th wasn’t bad either. With 2 outs though, a nicely hit ball went to the LF and looked to be a diving beautiful catch… but it bounces off his glove almost to the warning track which allows LSU to tie it up. But again, 2 outs, a runner on 2nd, not the end of the world, the next batter hits a ball and it goes to the 2B and it goes off his glove with an odd bounce which allows the runner to make it home and send the Razorbacks home.

  • CWS Final
    • Game 1 was a clinic put on my Cole Anderson, LSU’s pitcher. He pitched a complete shutout game. LSU scored early and that was all the scoring of this game.
    • Game 2, the Chanticleers struck first with a run in the 2nd but LSU would answer and quickly! The Tigers put up 1 in the 3rd and then 4 in the 4th. Coastal Carolina would get 2 more in the 7th but also had 2 errors and it wasn’t enough. LSU wins the national championship again (won two years ago 2023).

Basketball-NBA:

  • NBA Finals:
    • Game 5 was Monday night. Jalen Williams had himself a day scoring 40 points. The Thunder won 3 of the 4 Qs and would hold on to win and take their first series lead at home.
    • Game 6 started close and then the Thunder wellll shiz the bed is a good word. The Thunder didnt score for the first 5 minutes of the 3Q. They only scored 17 and then 18 points in the middle Qs. It was ugly! Series tied and we head back to OKC for a winner-take-all Game 7.
    • Game 7 was close! The teams traded Qs in the 1H. Also the Pacers’ star Tyrese Halliburton went down and out just 3 minutes into the game with an Achilles injury. Not something you ever want to see. But OKC got their first double digit lead with 1:56 to go in the 3rd. OKC outscored IND 34-20 in that Q. From there, they held on to win their first NBA Championship.

  • The draft is this week and that means that other players are starting to move around. Dominating the headlines, Kevin Durant was traded by the Suns to the Rockets.

Golf:

  • The Travelers Championship is becoming one of the latest best fan experiences on the PGA Tour. Scottie Scheffler looked like his normal self again, shooting to the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend. However Saturday screwed up a lot of people including Scottie, who shot 72 for the day, just his 5th round over par in the last 55. But Tommy Fleetwood surged ahead with an impressive 63 on Saturday to have a 3 shot lead heading into the final round. Keagan Bradley had a clutch shot into the green on 18 to put some pressure on Tommy Fleetwood who had the lead all day. Bradley’s shot was 5 feet away from the hole while Fleetwood was 50 but he still led by one. Tommy did about the worst thing you could do though. He left the putt short and so short that he was still outside Bradley and exactly on his line. So Tommy putted, Keagan looking on and Tommy still missed. We are now tied. Keagan, after that exact look, did not miss. He birdied the final hole to win in a huge comeback!

Hockey:

  • Frankly the Panthers stopped playing with their food in Game 6. They scored 2 in the 1P, 1 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd.  The Oilers would score 1 in garbage time but this was done a while ago. Panthers lift the Stanley Cup again and we are now on dynasty watch. The Panthers won the last Stanely Cup and made it to the finals the year before. Florida is starting to be the place for hockey. CAN on the other hand hasn’t won the Cup since 1993.

Some quick highlights:

  • Football: Shedeur Sanders got a speeding ticket for going 101 in a 60 mph zone. This is the 2nd one this month and he failed to show up for his arraignment. Smart decisions.
  • Tom Brady wins the first ever Fanatics Games which pitted fans against celebs and athletes in 8 competitions (Qb skills, basketball around the world, soccer goal scoring, baseball pitching accuracy, washer dryer hockey shooting, WWE Superstar entrance, UFC Striking and closest to the pin golf. 6 fans were in the top 10 while Brady won, a UCF fighter was #2, James Harden #4, Eli Manning #5.
  • Olympics: Kirsty Coventry becomes the first woman president of the IOC as of today when she was inaugurated.
  • UFC: Jon Jones is retiring from UFC. He has 16 wins in title fights and has never been knocked down in his MMA career.
