Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- The Dbacks beat the White Sox 10-0 on Monday with Pavin Smith having himself a day. He hit 2 HRs and had 4 RBIs. Pirates player Nick Gonzales went 5 for 5 during their narrow win over the Brewers 5-4, despite having 14 hits on the night. Cal Raleigh hit 1 of the 4 HRs by the Mariners. He now leads the league with 32 and is on pace to break the HR record before the All-Star Break. Oh and Seattle won 11-2 over the twins.
- The Mariners would win the next night too but only by 1 and it was in the 9th off a sac fly to do it! They have now won 8 of the last 11 games. The Orioles had 3 straight HRs in the 7th inning so they won right? Nope! They would still lose to the Rangers in the 10th inning by 1.
- Rangers P Jacob deGrom was so close but no cigar to a no hitter. He would lose it in the 8th inning with 1 hit to the Orioles. Texas would still win 7-0. Speaking of good pitching, Yankees P Max Fried was the first to hit double digit wins with his win over the Reds 7-1 on Wed. His record for the season is 10-2.
-
- The Marlins get the big upset over the Giants, winning 12-5 on Thursday. Not only that but they also swept the series! The Giants sit at 44-37 for the season compared to the marlins who are more than 10 games below .500. The Pirates outscore the Mets 30-4 in their sweep.
- The Phillies put up 13 on Friday to beat the Braves. In the last 3 games, they hadn’t put up 4 combined. But they weren’t the highest scorers of the night. The Nationals set their season high with 15 runs and 19 hits in their 6 run win over the Angels. Oh but they still didn’t win it. The Orioles put up 22 runs on the Rays! The only inning without a run by either team was the first. Only 7 HRs by both teams though in the 30 runs scored!
- The Mets held a players only meeting after their loss to the Pirates 9-2 on Saturday. TBD what comes from that. The Cardinals came back from a 5-run deficit to beat the Guardians 9-6. The Royals finally won at home, breaking their 11 game losing streak in KC. They beat the Dodgers of all teams 9-5.
- The Mariners made a lot of headlines this week in this podcast. One more on Sunday with a game that went into the 12th inning before they would win out 6-4 with a HR in the 3rd extra inning.
Basketball-NBA:
- It was the NBA draft this week and to no one’s surprise, Cooper Flagg went #1 to the Mavericks. But there was plenty to talk about. Rutgers Ace Bailey went to Utah which wasn’t even on the radar. The Pelicans made big moves to get #7 Jeremiah Fears (Oklahoma) and Derik Queen (Maryland). The Nets had the most picks in the first round with 5 and they didn’t trade any!
- Signing:
- LeBron is staying put in LA for a cool $52.6MM for 1 year. This is his 23rd season and is just 50 games shy of the regular season record set by Robert Parish.
- LA is keeping all the talent. James Harden opted to stay with the Clippers for $81.5MM for 2 years.
- Dallas shelled out for Kyrie to stay as well. He signed a $119MM contract for 3 years.
Golf:
- Aldrich Potgieter started off hot at the Rocket Mortgage, tying the course record through 18 holes with Kevin Roy who both put up 62 on day 1. Min Woo Lee got a 63 the next day to tie the course record as well. After the weekend, we ended up tied with Max Greyserman and Potgieter and Chris Kirk after 18. Both Max and Aldrich had a chance to end it but missed their birdie putts. All 3 headed to a playoff. Kirk was the first to fall, on the 2nd playoff hole after he missed a 4 foot putt. Each had a chance in the 5 playoff holes they played and it kinda looked like ‘you have it’ ‘no you have it’ but finally on the fifth, Potgieter wins his first PGA Tour title, making an 18 foot putt. He is the 9th player to get his first PGA Tour title of the season.
- LIV was in Dallas this weekend and it was also an entertaining ending. Patrick Reed who is from Texas started with a 5-shot lead but ended with a 75. He would be one of the 4 men playing in a sudden death playoff at -6. The other 3 men all missed big time. Louis Oosthuizen hit the water – he’s out. Paul Casey hit a bunker and Jinchiro Kozuma missed the green in regulation. Reed nailed a 20 foot birdie putt to win. Bryson DeChambeau’s, a Dallas native, team the Crushers won the team event which is their 3rd tourney in a row.
- Colin Morikawa is now seeking his 2nd new caddie of 2025!
Hockey:
- The NHL Draft was this weekend and Matthew Schaefer went #1 from Canada. The Islanders got to pick him. 20 players picked in the first round were from CAN, while 6 were USA.
Olympic Sports:
- Lara Gut-Behrami is retiring after this ski season. She is a 2x World Cup champion and plans to join her husband in London who is the sporting director of the English club Watford. She won the gold medal in the Super G and the Bronze in the Giant Slalom at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
- In other disappointing news, Faith Kipyegon fell short of breaking the 4 minute mile mark. She ran 4:06.42 but that was with a body suit and pacers. She did break her own WR time but is still a ways off from the feat. Al
Tennis:
- The Wimbledon has begun. Coco Gauff has not advanced past the 4th round on grass, her weakest court. Barbora Krejcikova and Carlos Alcaraz are the defending champs.
Some quick highlights:
- WNBA: Candace Parker’s #3 was retired by the LA Sparks.
- Aaron Rodgers looks set to retire after he told the Pat McAfee show that it looked inevitable.
