Baseball/Softball-NCAA:
- It was conference championship weekend for softball and we had some thrillers.
- In the SEC, Oklahoma came back from being down 1-6 against Arkansas – the largest comeback in SEC tournament history. Also their 6 HRs was a SEC record. The Sooner would make the championship game over the Razorbacks 8-6. However the SEC championship game between the Sooners and Texas A&M got cancelled due to weather and both teams were named co-champs. Whomp whomp.
- In the Big Ten, Michigan scored the only 2 runs of the game in the 6th inning to win back to back Big Ten tourneys. They would beat UCLA in the title game.
- In the ACC, in a clutch play, Clemson hit a 2-run HR in the 7th inning to come back to win over Florida St 2-1. This was the Tiger’s first ACC title.
- Texas Tech was the regular season champion in the Big 12 and can add tournament champion to their resume. They beat Arizona 4-0 to claim their first Big 12 title. The Red Raiders were 8-16 last year and end this year 20-4. To get to the championship game, TT put up 18 runs against Arizona St, a Big 12 tournament record.

Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- The Padres kept the win streak from last week going on Monday. They would rally in the 8th inning to beat the Yankees 4-3. That would knotch their 6th straight win. However that would end the next day to NY who crushed them 12-3. They would ultimately lose the series.
- The Rangers would have 16 hits in Tues game against the Red Sox. However TX would only score 6 but it was enough to win by 5 runs. We had 3 games go into extra innings on Tues. The Marlins beat the Dodgers by 1 and the Braves beat the Reds 2-1 both in the 10th. The Giants/Cubs would need until the 11th. But man the Giants got it rolling, putting up 9 runs to win 14-5.
- The Guardians had a 8-run 6th inning to beat the Nationals but only by 2. The Mariners came back from a 5-run deficit in the 5th They would score 6 unanswered over the next 4 innings to win over the A’s. That is the Mariner’s 9th straight series win. However they have lost 2 games to the Blue Jays so looks like that streak will end.
- Thursday was a high scoring day. The Royals swept the White Sox 10-0 and the 4-game series. The Tigers/Rockies had a double header and they also scored 10 to beat the Rockies by 8. The 2nd game was similar 11-1. Every team that played that day scored at least 5 runs!
-
- The Yankees scored 10 in their 8-run win over the A’s. Jasson Dominguez hit 3 HRs and RBI’d 7 runs. He is the youngest Yankee to hit 3 HRs in a single game. The Padres went to town against the Rockies in a high scoring game and won 13-9. The Dodgers and Dbacks also both scored double digits runs. Shohei Ohtani hit a go-ahead HR in the 9th to win 14-11. In direct contrast, the longest game of the week was on Friday between the Red Sox and Royals. It took til the 12th The game was 0-0 into extra innings. The Red Sox scored first in the 11th but the Royals also scored 1 in the 11th so we headed to the 12. The Royals would be the only team to score then with a RBI single to win the game.
- The Yankees continued to hit homers on Sat too. Aaron Judge hit 2 HRs to now lead the league with 14 HRs. Despite that, the Yankees lost 7-11 to the A’s. The Red Sox bounced back to beat the Royals 10-1. The Rangers beat the Tigers 10-3. The Reds put up 10 runs in the first inning to win over the Astros in a high scoring affrair 13-9. But none of that compares to what the Padres did. San Diego crushed the Rockies and shut them out 21-0! Only 5 of those were HRs by a different player each time.
- Phillies star Kyle Schwarber hit his 14th HR to tie Judge for the lead in the league in the 3-0 win over the Guardians. The Rockies won their game on Sunday against the Padres in a nice send off to their manager, Bud Black who is leaving the team. Rockies upset the Padres 9-3.
Basketball-NBA:
- The underdogs went 6-0 to start the week!
- Round 2 East:
- Multiple Knicks put up 29 including star Jalen Brunson and that would help NY keep it close with the Celtics. Boston had a bad 4Q to let NY tie it up and they would head to OT. It was still close and back and forth but NY would steal this one. The Celtics would also set a NBA playoff record (that no one would want) with the most 3-pointers missed in a playoff game at 45. Game 2 was low scoring. Neither team would break 100 points and only 4 players would score 20 points. The Knicks only scored 13 in the 1Q and looked to give the Celtics the game but then the 4Q was lopsided the other way. The Knicks cameback to outscore BOS by 13 to steal another game. NY leads 2-0. The Celtics decided to stop playing with their food in Game 3 and beat NY 115-93. They lead the entire time and coasted in the 4Q to give some points back but an easy win. That series ends the week NY 2-1.
-
- The Pacers stole game 1 shocking everyone. Game 2 was a horrible start for Indiana, with only 15 points but they managed to claw back by points 30+ in the next 3 Qs. Remember how Haliburton put up a game-winning layup but his dad messed up the headlines? Well here you go. In game 2, Haliburton had a game winning 3 pointer to win by 1 and crush Cav fans’ dreams. A game-winning 3 is better than a game winning layup anyway. Pacers up 2-0. The Cavs had had enough. Game 3 was all Cavs after the 2Q. Cleveland would win by 22 with Donovan Mitchell putting up 43. Game 4 was a massacre by IND. They were up by 41 at halftime! 80 points already on the board when sometimes that’s the finishing score. Needless to say they won game 4 and have the series lead 3-1. Not looking good for the Cavs – who were one of the favorites after the season. Goes to show that injuries during playoffs matter.
- Round 2 West:
- The Nuggets may’ve needed 7 games to get to the Semifinals but they would use the momentum in Game 1. The Thunder who swept their opponent, got surprised in Game 1. The Nuggets kept it close for the 1H but really turned it on in the 2H, outscoring OKC by 12 to take Game 1 and shock Thunder fans. Jokic had 42 points, 22 rebounds and 6 assists while SGA only had 33. However Game 2 looked back to normal for the Thunder who put up 40+ in both 1H quarters. They outscored the Nugs by 31 and continued to pile on. They would win by 43 and tie up the series. Game 3 was a good one. Both teams started off slower and it was a lower scoring game in general – much more defensive. The Nuggets came back slightly in the 4Q to tie it up and we would go to OT. It was all Denver in OT at home and the Nuggets would take another win. Game 4 was a low scoring affair (neither team would hit 100). If I told you the Thunder only had 17 points in the 1Q, you would assume that they got beat. Oh no. the Nuggets only put up 8 points – 8!! Hard to bounce back from that. Believe it or not, they would come back to tie it up and take the lead for a while at the end of 3Q and bginning of the 4Q but it wasn’t enough. Thunder tie up the series winning this one 92-87
- The Timberwolves had a Q with only 11 points yuck! Hard to win a game like that although it was closer than you would think. Steph went out just 13 minutes into this game and was ruled out for Game 2 at minimum. The Warriors win game 1 99-88 despite the loss of their star. The lack of Steph showed in game 2, the Timberwolves won this one big time by 24 points. Game 3 was close through half with the Warriors leading only by 2. Both teams picked it up in the 3Q and the T-Wolves pulled away in the 4Q. They would make up ground and win by 5.
Golf:
- The Truist came down to the final hole and the final 2 golfers. Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka shared the lead going into the final round and the result didn’t change at the end. Shane looked to have it won when he had a 21-foot birdie putt to win the tournament. However he miss hit it and it went 6-feet by the hole (further than Straka’s 30+ birdie attempt did). To make matters worse, Lowry also missed the par putt and Straka wouldn’t miss his. The AUT golfer has now won 4xs on the PGA Tour and twice this year. Some nice momentum going into PGA Championship week.
Hockey:
- A playoff update East:
- Toronto scored just 33 seconds into Game 1 and added 2 more in 1P. They would win Game 1 and 2 actually by 1. Game 3 though would go into OT in a thriller in Florida. The Panthers would take a game in OT. Game 4 was all Panthers. They would score the 2 goals in the game and tie up the series.
- The Capitals/Hurricanes Game 1 went into OT although Carolina would score early to take game 1. The Capitals took out their frustration in Game 2, beating Carolina 3-1. The Hurricanes repaid the favor in game 3, shutting out the Capitals 4-0. They lead the series 2-1.
- West:
- The Oilers came back to score 3 goals in the final P to beat the Golden Knights and steal Game 1. Game 2 would go to OT and was a thriller in Vegas. The Knights scored 2 in 3P to tie it up but the Oilers would manage to score the lone goal in OT to win 5-4. Both teams would score 2 goals in the 1P in Game 3. But the Knights would score 1 in each of the next 2Ps including one at the end of the game in a buzzer-beater to stun the Oilers. However they still lead the series 2-1.
- There was no scoring outside the 2P for either team in the Stars/Jets matchup. Mikko, the star from the first series, again scored the hat trick for Dallas to win the game by 1. The Jets shutout the Stars 4-0 to tie up the series. The Stars scored 2 goals in 45 seconds at the beginning of the 3P. They would win game 3 5-2 and take the series lead 2-1.
Some quick highlights:
- Football – NCAAF: Utah QB Cam Rising has announced that he is retiring from football at the age of 25. He suffered a hand injury during last season after just 3 games and he will need surgery. He has played college football since 2018.
- Hockey: The Utah Hockey Club has chosen their name. They will be the Utah Mammoths and I like it!
- Horseracing: Sovereignty will not run in the Preakness.
- MotoGP: For the first time since 1954, there was a French rider to win at the home race. You could hear the fans in the broadcast with 300k people in attendance. It was a crazy rain in the rain with multiple changing of tires but it was all the Frenchman who decided to start the race on wet tires which was 100% the right decision.
