Quick Headlines: NCAA LAX. Olympics.
Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- Jesus Sanchez was the hero of the game for the Marlins over the Cubs on Monday. He was the first batter up for Miami and after 3 balls, hit a leadoff HR. He would also hit a single, steal a base, strike out and in the 9th inning, down 1, he hit the game winning triple that brought home 2 runners to win! Marlins upset the Cubs 8-7. Phillies star Kyle Schwarber hit his 300th HR to beat the Rockies 9-3. The DBacks beat the Dodgers which was an upset but the newsworthy part of this game was that P Pfaadt got his 7th win of the season which leads the league. The Red would win their 5th straight game Monday before dropping 3 straight the next day. The Guardians/Twins game was a short one with Twins winning 6-5 in just 4 innings as the game was suspended to rain. They would finish out the game on Tuesday.
- The Cubs took revenge on the Marlins on Tuesday putting up 8 runs in the 6th inning and crushing them 14-1.
- The Orioles snapped their 8-game losing streak with a HR in the 11th inning to win by 4 over the Brewers. The Guardians would also snap their 5-game losing streak with their 5-1 win over the Twins. The Blue Jays crushed the Padres 14-0 including a 7-run 8th inning with a grand slam.
- The next day, the Blue Jays would beat the Padres again but they would need 11 innings to do it. On Friday, the Orioles and Red Sox had a double header. Boston destroyed Baltimore in the 1st one, 19-5. The 2nd one got postponed.. they were prob tired anyway. The Longest game of the week was the Dodgers/Mets on Friday. It went into the 13th inning before the the Dodgers would win by 2. Braves Acuna Jr made his debut back on the baseball field after a long recovery from injury. On his first pitch back, he would smack a HR.
- The double header for the Orioles/Red Sox got rescheduled for Sat. The Red Sox won the first one but it went into the 10th inning and they only won by 1 this time. The 2nd game, the Orioles would take by 1. The Padres who were doing well this season dropped their 6th straight games losing both series to the Mariners and Blue Jays. They would get back on track but winning a close one over the Braves to end that ugly streak. The Angels won 8 in a row before dropping one to the Marlins 6-2. The Guardians have the MLB leading Tigers’ number. They would beat them 3 straight games.
- Tigers P Tarik Skubal threw 13Ks in their 5-0 shutout of the Guardians on Sunday. Pirates slugger CF Oneil Cruz hit his HR ball 122.9 MPH is the fastest ball velocity since they started tracking (2015). It was still a loss for Pittsburgh though as they drop the game by 1 to the Brewers. The Rays crushed the Blue Jays 13-0!
- The Rockies have had the worst start since 1895 through 50 games. Their record is 9-45.
Baseball/Softball – NCAA:
- Super Regionals: 2. Oklahoma, 12. Texas Tech and 16. Oregon advanced by winning their first 2 games and not needing a game 3. Texas Tech would sweep #5 Florida St at home! They won both games by a single run to go to the program’s first WCWS.
- Clemson and 7. Texas played Thurs and Friday. Clemson would get the upset in Game 1 7-4. Game 2 would go to the 10th inning before Texas would finally win. That’s when you knew it was over for Clemson. The Tigers struggled in Game 3 but tried to make a comeback and fell 1 run short in the final inning. Texas escapes.
- #3 Florida would win Game 1 easily. But Game 2, Georgia took by 1. The Gators would rally in Game 3 winning 5-2.
- Unranked Ole Miss shocked #4 Arkansas at home, winning 9-7. The Razorbacks would shutout the Rebels 4-0. Game 3 was a great one. We were tied 4-4 in the 4th. Ole Miss would pull away and put the nail in the coffin with 2 runs in the 7th to win 7-4. This will be Ole Miss’ first time to OKC. They will play Texas Tech, the other team who is playing in their first WCWS.
- Similarly, Nebraska beat #7 Tennessee by 2 in Game 1. But then Game 2 was a close one! the Vols got back on track winning 3-2 to force game 3. Game 3 was also a close one, the Vols put away the Huskers 1-0 and advance to OKC.
- #8 South Carolina beat #9 UCLA pretty badly 9-2 in Game 1. Game 2, winning 4-1 in the final inning, the Gamecocks were just 1 out away from eliminating the Bruins (who are the softball dynasty of old). But with 2 outs, UCLA hits a 2-run HR to put it away. Soul crushing for SC and Game 3 showed it. UCLA shutout SC 5-0 to punch their ticket.
- Softball: TN’s P Pickens threw the hardest softball pitch on record, unseating her old record with a new throw of 79.4 mph oh and the batter got a bat on it!
- In baseball it was conference championship week:
- ACC: UNC crushed Clemson 14-4 in the final game of the tournament. The Semifinals both UNC and Clemson beat out higher ranked opponents to make the final.
- Big Ten: Nebraska successfully defended their Big Ten tournament title from last season. They would shut out UCLA 5-0.
- Big 12: The Big 12 tournament final went into extra innings before we would get a winner. Arizona would win 2-1 to claim their second straight title (although last year’s was the final Pac 12 title).
- SEC: Ole Miss upset LSU to make their way into the final in the SEC tournament but they would lose by 1 run to Vanderbilt.
Basketball-NBA:
- West Conference Finals:
- Game 1 was close for the first half between the Timberwolves and Thunder. But the Thunder went off in the 2H. They outscored MN 70-40. Game 2 was much closer but not by much. The Thunder won every quarter until the 4th but it was too late. Thunder take a 2-0 lead with 118-103. However those games were in OKC. Then we headed to MN. And it showed! The Thunder only scored 14 points in the 1Q and SGA was held to 14 points all game. In contrast, the Timberwolves went off on 3s shooting 50%. Hard to come back from that stat. Minnesota would win by 43 and set a franchise record for the most points scored in a playoff game at 143. Series is currently 2-1 OKC.
- East Conference Final: The Pacers and Knicks met 6xs between 1994-2000 so they are very familiar with each other.
- Game 1 of the Pacers/Knicks was much more entertaining than the West. The Knicks took the lead, winning both Qs in the 1H. The Knicks still lead by 14 with 3 minutes left in the game. But then the tide turned quickly with a bunch of great Pacers shots. The final one by Haliburton was a buzzer beater looked like a 3-pointer to win, the ball bounced straight up off the rim and back in the basket. But Halliburton’s foot was on the line so it was a 2-pointer to tie. The Pacers would win this one in OT and upset the home crowd at MSG. Game 2 was more of the same. The Knicks led in the 1H but only by 3. Then the Pacers would win the next 2 Qs barely but still. It was enough to win by 5 and take the 2-0 lead away! The Knicks finally managed to win a game on Sunday. Despite a lower scoring 2Q with only 19, they would comeback in the 2H to win both Qs including outscoring Indiana by 16 in the final Q. IND leads the series now just 2-1.
- The Thunder welcomed the NBA MVP trophy to OKC as SGA got the honor this year. Last year he was runner up to Jokic.
Football:
- NFL: They will continue to allow the tush push although it was by a narrow margin.
- CFB: The 12 team CFP will have new seeding next year. It will be a straight seeding model with the top 4 ranked teams getting a bye not guaranteed to conference champions. They will still be guaranteed into the playoff though. Remember all four teams that got the first round bye last year, lost their games. In last year’s bracket, that would’ve given Penn St and Texas a bye. The hope is that this will produce better games which I do agree it will.
- CFB: Bill Belicheck is engaged to Jordan. Congrats?
- CFB: ND and USC have not renewed their rivalary which only has 1 more year on the contract. ND has said that they definitely want to continue playing USC however the Trojans are not as sold. Since 1924, the teams have played 94xs and only missed 4 games in that time span.
Golf:
- The PGA Tour came back to the DFW area for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Ben Griffin took his time when lining up for his final putt for par on 18 for his debut PGA Tour victory. GER Matti Schmid shot +2 in his final round to let Ben have it by 1. Both of those guys shot a 66 in Round 1, 63 in Round 2 and 68 in Round 3. Ben would finish with a +1 for the day but it was enough to hold on.
Hockey:
- East Conference finals: The Panthers crushed game 1 over the Hurricanes winning 5-2 and Game 2, they shutout Carolina at home 5-0. Nothing changed when the teams headed to FL, the Panthers won 6-2 Saturday night and currently lead the series 3-0. The Hurricanes have lost 14 straight conference final games.
- West Conference Finals: The Oilers were winning Game 1 3-1 heading into the final P. But then Dallas went off, putting 5 goals in the net to take Game 1 at home. Game 2 was all Oilers though who had their same 3 goals by the start of 3P. Dallas wouldn’t have any goals in this one though. Series tied 1-1. Game 3 was allllll Oilers. They put up 2 goals in the 1P, 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3P to win 6-1.
Motorsports:
- It was Indy 500 weekend and we have not only news about who won the race, but also a scandal. Penske was moved to the back of the grid after it was discovered that they had made an illegal modification. That modification was in violation for safety reasons and was basically bonding two pieces together. One of the Penske drivers was going for a three Pete at Indy, which obviously was unlikely after getting moved to the back of the grid. Alex Palou won the 109th Indy 500 which was his first win on the track despite winning 3 other IndyCar races.
- Lando Norris won the famous Monaco GP for F1.
Olympic Sports:
- It is not April Fools – there is a new competition in town, the Enhanced Games will have its first formal competition in May 2026 in Las Vegas. This competition is designed for athletes who use PED and encouraged to do so to see the advancement that can be made with science. The winner of each event will get $250K. The events are scheduled to be the 50 and 100m in free and fly, 100m sprint, 100h and 110h, snatch, clean and jerk.
- DEN beat CAN to send them home in the World Hockey Quarterfinals. DEN only had 2 NHL players on the team compared to CAN who only has 2 team members who are NOT NHL players. The Semifinals are now set, DEN vs SUI and USA vs SWE.
Some quick highlights:
- NCAA LAX: Cornell grabs first NCAA D1 title since 1977 with the best player in the country, CJ Krist. They beat Maryland 13-10.
- WNBA: Cailtin Clark did not manage to hit a single three-pointer in their game in Atlanta this week. That was the first time in 140 games that she didn’t get a single one. That streak comes to an end.
- Olympics: Flag football will be featured in the LA 2028 Olympic games and the NFL released this week that it will allow players to participate. Only 10 men make the roster though so competition is going to be tight!
- Soccer: Tottenham won the Europa league for the first time in 17 years!
