Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- We started off the week with a banger for the Mets. Brandon Nimmo tied the Mets franchise record with 9 RBIs. They would beat the Nationals 19-5. The Twins got their seasons best 17 hits to beat the Guardians 11-1.
- The Yankees hit 6 HRs in their dissemination of the Orioles 15-3. They started the game with back to back to back HRs. Grisham hit his 2nd pitch, Aaron Judge hit his first and Rice hit his 2nd. Then they had a ground out and another HR by Bellinger. What a start! The Red Sox had a similar game of 5 HRs to win their 3rd straight game. This one was over the Blue Jays 10-2. The Rangers put up 15 in their best batting game all season over the A’s. Also scoring 15 was the Dodgers in their game over the Marlins.
- On Wed, the Cardinals and Reds had a double header. The Reds lost the first one and was shutout 0-6 which killed their 5-game win streak. They would lose the 2nd that day too 9-1. On the flip side, the Rockies stopped their 8-game losing streak to beat the Braves by 1. That’s only their 5th win of the season. They would win the next day too over the Giants. That upset P Justin Verlanders’ debut as a Giant.
- Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr had a 22 game hitting streak that ended on Friday. He went 0-4 in the Royals shutout loss to the Orioles.
- It was a day of HRs on Saturday. 35 to be exact! Aaron Judge got his 11th of the season but the Yankees would still lose 3-2 to the Rays. The Guardians got a grand slam to win by 2 over the Blue Jays. The Giants also got a grand slam to win by 3 over the Rockies. The Marlins get a walk off grand slam to beat the A’s. Roger Clemens’ son Kody hit a 2-run HR for the Twins. The Cubs hit back to back HRs to beat the Brewers 6-2. The Phillies went up early 6-0 with a 3 run HR. Mariners Crawford got a HR on the first pitch of the game and Seattle won 2-1 over the Rangers.
- The Cardinals won both of their double header games over the Mets by 1 both times.
- During the Pirates/Cubs game on Tuesday, a fan fell 21 feet from the wall at PNC Park in the 7th That former football player was taken away to the hospital and was later in the week awake and responsive.
Basketball-NBA:
- Finishing up Round 1 in the East:
- The Cavs finished up their first round with a sweep on Monday. The Heat didn’t get 20 points in the first 2 Qs of the game. It was a rout in Game 4 138-83 with the 4th largest playoff win in NBA history. Cavs sweep and advance.
-
- The Pacers started off their game very slow scoring only 13 points. But the Bucks then only scored 17 in the 2Q. The game was back and forth and ended up in OT. Giannis had 30 points but Haliburton had 27. Haliburton had potentially the best play of his career though with a game winning layup in OT with just 1.3 seconds left. Too bad that was overshadowed by what happened next. Halliburton’s dad got on the court and up in Giannis’ face cursing him out. Luckily Giannis did not retaliate but it was all anyone was talking about after this game. Even Haliburton admitted his dad was in the wrong. He has now been banned from Pacer games for the ‘foreseeable future.’ Pacers win the series 4-1 and advance.
-
- The Celtics wrapped up their series on Tuesday as well with an easy win over the Magic. Final score of game 5 was 120-89. Celtics advance taking the series 4-1.
- The Pistons/Knicks game 5 was close. The biggest lead ever in this game was 9 points. 2 of the Qs the teams scored the same amount of points. No one on the Knicks scored 20 points. Narrowly the Pistons hold on to beat the Knicks at home to force game 6. But Game 6 was all Jalen Brunson had himself a day, putting up 40 points. Despite that, the game was still really close with the Qs alternating who was winning. But ultimately the Pistons could score 3 more points in the final Q and that would let the Knicks clinch the series 4-2.
- West Round 1:
- The Timberwolves finished the job on Wednesday, putting away the Lakers 103-96 to win the series 4-1 and advance. Luka, LeBron and the Lakers are out.
- The Warriors won a close one on Monday over the Rockets to go up in the series 3-1. The Rockets started hot in game 5 with 40 points in the 1Q. They would win the first 2Qs, tie the 4th and while the Warriors tried to comeback they would not make up all those points. Houston wins 131-116. Houston continued that momentum on Friday in Game 6. It was a closer game but Rocket force Game 7 with a 8 point victory. Game 7 was on Sunday and would be the final game of the first round. Despite the nice fight to make it there, it was anti-climatic. The Warriors led by 4 after 1, 12 after 2, gave some back in the 3rd (lead by 8) and then won 103-89.
-
- The Clippers/Nuggets series had been back and forth, tied both times at 2-2 last week and again 3-3 to take it to a winner-take-all game 7. But let’s go back. Game 5 was all Nuggets with DEN scoring 30+ in every Q to win by 16. Although Jokic only scored 13 points for the entire game. Game 6 though the Nuggets wouldnt get to 30 in a single Q so quite a flip. The Clippers would win game 6 at home 111-105. Game 7 was Saturday. The Nuggets dominated the 2 middle Qs outscoring the Clippers by 32 in those 2Qs alone. That would be enough to win (despite LA trying to mount a comeback with 35 in the 4Q). Nuggets win game 7 120-101. DEN advances.
- We got our first Semifinal game on Sunday as well as the Rockets/Warriors Game 7. The Pacers shot 50%+ on field goals and from the 3-point line (compared to 46% and 23.7% – Yikes for the Cavs). The Pacers ended 1Q with an 11-point lead. They would have the lead until 3 min left in the 3Q. We went back and forth for a while until Haliburton went off in the final 6 min of the game. The Pacers would upset the Cavs and take game 1 by 9.
- Stephon Castle won the Rookie of the Year award for this year. That puts the last two ROY awards both in San Antonio – watch out for that team in the future.
- Speaking of the Spurs, Greg Popovich will no longer be coaching in San Antonio. He had a stroke earlier this year and did not return. The Interim HC will continue as the main HC now. Popovich is the winningest HC in NBA history (1422-869), coaching the Spurs from 1996-2025. He is a 5x NBA Champion, 3x NBA Coach of the Year and was the HC for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medal team. He will now be the President of Basketball Operations for the Spurs.
Golf:
- CJ Cup at the Byron Nelson: Scottie started off strong with a opening round of 61 to have a two shot lead. His second round was a 63 and he actually got to finish his 2nd round on the rain delayed Friday (others teed off just 15 min before sunset). So needless to say they had some making up to do on Saturday. Scottie led by 6 – that is a Bryon Nelson record. He had an 8-shot lead by round 3, again tying a Nelson record. No one got closer than 6 shots in the final round. This is 14th PGA Tour title and his first of the 2025 season. Scottie started his PGA Tour career at the Byron Nelson when he was in high school with his sister Callie as his caddie. His comfortability around the course showed the entire weekend. Remember he missed last year’s tournament for the first of his son, Bennett who was in attendance this time. Scottie’s 253 through 4 rounds matched Justin Thomas’ 2017 Sony Open and Ludvig Aberg’s RSM Classic at -31 under par.
- LIV Korea: Bryson DeCheambeau wins Korean LIV event by 2 over his own teammate Charles Howell III which means that his team, the Crushers, also won the team event.
- Jim Dent, a caddie for years at Augusta and then a pioneer black golfer, died at the age of 85. He was one of the PGA Tour’s longest hitters and one of the top black golfers where he played for 16 years.
Hockey:
- A playoff update:
- East: The Panthers scored 2 goals in 11 seconds to take the lead and win game 4. They would win the series in the next game and advance. The Hurricanes needed 2OT to do it but they get the win and advance after winning the series 4-1. The Senators shutout the Maple Leafs in game 5 but Toronto still led the series 3-2. So the Leafs went to 1-15 in series clincher games. However, they would finish it up on the road on Thursday. Maple Leafs advance. The Capitals would wrap up their series on Wed with a 4-1 easy win. They would also win the series 4-1.
- West: The Stars smothered the Avalanche 6-2 in game 5 to take the series lead but then would drop game 6 7-4 to take it to game 7. Game 7 was crazy. The Avalanche lead 2-0 in the final period but Mikko Rantanen’s hat trick and another goal by Wyatt Johnson would give Dallas the win at home to advance in 7.Also the kicker, Mikko played for the Avalanche for 10 seasons and was the one to send them home. Poor Denver had 2 game 7s on the same day but at least they went .500. The Golden Knights would break the series tie in game 5 with an OT win before wrapping up the series on Thursday winning the game 3-2 and taking the series 4-2. Also on Tues, the Oilers would win their game 3-1 over the Kings to take the series lead into Thursday where they would win again 6-4 and advance. Wrapping up the West, the Jets won 5-3 to take the series lead in game 5. But the Blues would tie up the series on Friday with a 5-2 win. Game 7 was a doozy on Sunday. The Blues were leading 3-1 at the end of the 2nd But the Jets came back to tie it all back up and we headed to OT. No goals were scored in the 1OT but the Jets would manage to score in the final 3ish min to win the series and advance. That was a relief for what should’ve been an easy series.
Horseracing:
- It was the 151st Kentucky Derby this year and it was a sloppy track. For the first time in 3 years, Bob Baffert was back at the Kentucky Derby. Citizen Bull (bob Baffert’s horse) ran to the front. But he faded as they rounded the final corner. The betting favorite, Journalism ran it out with Sovereignty to the line. But Sovereignty was too much and took the victory. Into the Mischief has sired 3 Kentucky Derby winners now and every single horse in this race was a descendant from Secretariat.
-
- Other headlines from the weekend, Mike Tirico had an allergy attack and did not do the coverage. He is fine but had a nut allergy and therefore stepped away. Also Livvy Dunn was the celebrity to do the ‘Rider’s Up’ call and was critized because frankly it sucked!
-
Olympic Sports:
- We had some WR go down. Katie Ledecky broke her own WR in the 800m Free by .6 seconds. She had a great competition at the TYR Pro Series also swimming her 2nd fastest 400m Free in 9 years and her 2nd fastest 1500m ever (and in history). Gretchen Walsh also broke her own WR by .09. She also reset her own 50m Fly American Record.
- The IOC replaced 10 of USA swimmers Gary Hall Jr’s medals after he lost them in the LA fire. He was a swimmer in the ATL 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics, winning 5 golds, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
- On a not so positive note, Olympian Fred Kerley punched fellow Olympian Alaysha Johnson and was charged with a misdemeanor battery when Johnson got a bloody nose from the punch. This is not the first time Kerley has been in trouble. He also punched a cop in Jan and charged with domestic battery on his wife in 2024.
