Basketball-NBA:

  • This week’s games:
    • Monday had 2 games go into OT. The Wizards and Pistons game was back and forth which is surprising given Washington only had 1 win on the season. The Pistons had to comeback scoring 40 to bring the game into OT. Both teams had a player with points in the 40s. Even then it was still close but DET would pull it out to win by 2. The other was the Cavs/Heat which made more sense as they have at least similar records. MIA started slow and ended slow (1Q and 4Q). the Cavs had a bad 3Q. but they both scored 39 in the 3Q and ended up in OT. The Heat got the last laugh to win by 2 and keep their season undefeated at home (5-0).

    • On Wed, the Warriors only scored 14 points in the 1Q – Yikes! But then Steph Curry did what he does best and went off, scoring 46 points. They would sneak out a win by 5. That same night, Jokic had himself a day scoring 55 points to help the Nuggets beat the Clippers 130-116. On the flip side, the Lakers only scored 92 the entire game. They would get crushed by the reigning champs.
    • The Bucks struggled early in their game putting up 18 and 16 in the 1H. The Lakers would have a get right game from their Wed. They would win 119-95.
    • To end the week, there were 3 games that went into OT. The Rockets leaned on Durant and Senguin both scoring 30+ to put away the Magic by 4. The Mavs pulled off an upset by going off in OT scoring 20. They would beat the Trail Blazers. The Bulls/Jazz went to 2OT before we would get a result. Jazz star Markkanen would be responsible for 47 points and they would win by 3.

Basketball – NCAA:

  • Losses in the Top 25 MBB edition:
    • #9 Kentucky and #12 Louisville was the first ranked matchup of the week. The Cards would start hot with 53 points in the 1H. And even though the game looked close by points, Kentucky would not have a lead in this game passed the 11:35 mark in the 1H. Louisville wins 96-88. #11 Texas Tech had the top performer in this game with Toppin putting up 35 points by himself, that’s more points than the red Raiders had in the 1H. The 2H they would come back a little but it wasn’t enough to beat #14 Illinois. #19 Gonzaga handled both halves to crush #23 Creighton by 27! Not a loss but #6 Michigan needed OT to put away Wake Forest at home.
    • Purdue who got demoted to #2 this week had an impressive win against #8 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Boilermaker Braden Smith had 3 more rebounds than the leading Bama player. This game was a good one with 22 lead changes and 18 ties. This is the programs first non conference road win against a top 10 since 1982.
    • #5 Arizona and #15 UCLA both started off slow only scoring 28 points max in the 1H but they would warm up in the 2H with both teams in the 40s. This was a good game as well and despite UCLA shooting 3s in the 50% range, the Wildcats pull out the win in a lower scoring one 69-65.
    • #3 UConn played a very even game, scoring 43 in both halves. #7 BYU had to get rolling and they would come back a little in the 2H but the lead wouldn’t be under 5 for the Huskies (until right before the final buzzer when BYU made a 3). AJ Dybantsa and the Cougs take their first loss of the season.
    • Speaking of the Cougs, lets go to the #1 Houston vs #22 Auburn game on Sunday. Both teams didn’t shoot the 3s well. In the final 52 seconds, Auburn had a dunk to bring the game back to just a 1 point deficit but the Cougs would hold them off to win. Let’s see if that will be enough to stay #1.

Football – NCAAF:

  • There were 7 losses in the Top 25:
    • #4 Alabama had nearly doubled #11 Oklahoma’s offense but they had costly mistakes that would come back to haunt the Tide. Bama had 2 turnovers in the 1H and only trailed at half by a FG. But Oklahoma’s defense kept coming up with big stops and got the better of Ty Simpson. Sooners beat the Crimson Tide for the 2nd yr in a row and hands DeBoer his first loss at home as Alabama’s HC.
    • Just like Bama cant seem to beat Oklahoma, it seems like #10 Texas cant beat #5 Georgia. Texas wouldn’t score a TD until 5:27 to go in the 3Q to make it 10-14 and you thought this is where Texas starts to turn the game. Nope UGA would put up 21 in the 4Q including a surprise onside kick after a TD to rub salt in the wound. QB Gunner Stockton put up 5 TDs and 5 incompletions – now those are some good stats. Dawgs win big 35-10.
    • On Fri night, 20 Louisville missed 2 FGs in the 4Q and an extra point to get beat by Clemson. The Tigers would have to go for TDs on 4th down multiple times in the game to pull off the upset and there were plenty of mistakes on both sides but Clemson gets the 1 point win here. turns out that PAT was needed
    • 21 Iowa had a pretty commanding lead at one point, beating #17 USC 21-7 but the Trojans would come back to score the final 19 points of the game to sneak by a good Iowa team who has had a tough two weeks.
    • Gameday game of the week: 22 Pitt hosting #9 Notre Dame and the Irish got off to a good start (although missing a FG) with a TD and a pick 6 to go up early and they would never relinquish the lead. ND was up 37-9 before Pitt would get their first offensive TD, Irish continue to roll.
    • Newly ranked 24 USF was the only G5 team to make the CFP rankings. That will end this week as Navy ruin their CFP chances with a 41-38 win.
    • 25 Cinci had 2 turnovers that both resulted in points for Arizona. The Wildcats had 2 missed FGs as well but it was still enough to beat the bearcats by 6.

  • Other headlines from around the football universe:
    • #3 Texas A&M was down 30-3 at half after 3 turnovers in the 1H but the experts (and my husband who is a fan) said it should’ve been 6. Shane Beamer went into the locker room saying ‘he wasn’t surprised, they beat this team by 20 last year’ ohhhh the Aggies made him pay for that. They would complete the biggest comeback in school history. Teams were 0-287 when down 27+ since 2004. The Aggies scored on every drive in the 3Q. They would tie it up early in the 4Q but on their next drive, they were on the 1 and a backwards pass at the 5-ish going in to score gave SC the ball back. But the gamecocks wouldn’t do anything with it. Aggies escape a huge one!
    • #16 GT had a scare with Boston College, who didn’t have a ACC win up to this point. GT scored a TD but BC would score again with 4 to go but they would miss the 2-point conversion. GT nailed the FG and survives. This is the 3rd double digit come back in 4Q.
    • Florida would test #7 Ole Miss. The Gators were still leading at the start of the 4Q. RB Lacey had himself a day. It was really 27-24 but the rebels put a TD in the final mins to win by 10.
    • #19 UVA got Chandler Morris back and it showed. They beat Duke 34-17. This knocks Duke out of the ACC champ running
    • #18 Michigan barely beat Northwestern and you’re probably thinking ‘how?!’ Well 5 turnovers is how. But the wolverines still get the W in a last sec FG.
    • Start to pay attention to JMU. They might be the G5 team to get in. Esp with the USF loss to navy. Could be UNT which could have tamu, tx, tt and unt all in the playoff?!

Football – NFL:

  • MNF: The Eagles/Packers game was a defensive showdown. There were no points in the 1H by any team. The Eagles would put the first points on the board with a FG in the 3Q and turns out that was the difference maker. Both teams would get a TD in the 4Q. The Packers would be driving when they fumbled the ball around mid field. Phili would do nothing with that though and punt it back to them. The Packers would have 27 seconds and get to the the Eagles 46 but miss the 64 yard FG to tie the game.
  • TNF: After a shaky start to the season, the Pats have now really started to roll. Granted easy to say that when you play the Jets. RB TreVeyon Henderson scored 3 TDs for NE in their 27-14 win. That is their 8th straight!
  • Another week in Europe and another thriller. This week the NFL was in Spain and again this game went to OT. Although it was a pretty boring game before that. Both teams would have 2 FGs in the 1H each. It wouldn’t be til the 3Q when we would finally have a TD scored and this one was by the Commanders. The start of the 4Q, the Dolphins would get theirs. So we would go to OT. The Commanders would throw an INT on the first play and the Dolphins would nail a FG to put the game away.

  • There were 9 other close games:
    • That wasn’t the only game to go to OT. The Panthers/Falcons game did as well and there was a lot more scoring in this one. Bryce Young also had a franchise record 448 yards of passing. The Falcons would have a 21-7 lead in the 2Q but the Panthers would claw that back slowly but surely until the 4Q when they took the 27-24 lead with 1:08 left. But the Falcons would get their 45 yard FG in the final 16 seconds so we go to OT. The Falcons would have a costly penalty and were forced to punt on their possession. The Panthers would have a chip shot 28 yard FG to win. That it their 6th win of the season, a mark they didn’t hit last year!
    • The Texans didn’t have a single point on board until the 2H. They would score 1 TD and a bunch of FG to total 16 points, enough to put away the Titans who are winless at home. Similarly, the Broncos would only score 1 TD and 5 FGs and they would beat Mahomes and the Chiefs! The Bears would have the Vikings handled although the score looked closer than it was with 2 4Q TDs to bring this to a FG difference. The Rams would hold on to beat the Seahawks. Seattle would have 414 offensive yards, also double the Rams but 4 turnovers and a missed FG were killer. They still only lost by 2. The Ravens came back in the 4Q scoring 13 points to beat the Browns by a TD. IDK what is up with the Lions this season but they do not look like their normal selves. Both teams (Eagles and Lions) would only have 1 TD each. The Lions would miss their extra point. The Lions would only make it to the redzone once and come away with 0 points (their TD was a 40 yard pass). But the Eagles had more FGs to win by 7.
  • Some not so close games:
    • The Bills/Bucs game was the highest scoring of the day. This game was entertaining to say the least. The Bills had 6 total TDs oh and 3 turnovers. The Bucs had 2 turnovers of their own and both of those would lead to Bills TDs. That’s how this game got a little sideways. Bills win this one 44-32. To put this in perspective, the 32 points scored by the Bucs would’ve won all by 3 games this week.
    • The Jags crushed the Chargers 35-6. LA would only manage 2 FGs. The Steelers had a strong 2H scoring 24 to handle the Bengals 34-12.

Golf:

  • Adam Schenk was on the brink of losing his PGA Tour card and having to go back to Q-school when he won the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. He won by 1 in windy conditions in his 243rdstart

Olympic Sports:

  • LA28 announced their Olympic schedule. The first Olympic gold will be the women’s triathlon. Not only that but the W 100m gold will be given out on Day 1 which will require the ladies to run all 3 rounds on one day. Also the 400m and 400h double is not possible – not that Sydney Mclauglin-Levrone said she would but we know that answer now. Track being featured before the swimming events is unusual, the last time the schedule that that flip was back in Mexico City 1968. Ultimately the decision was made because SoFi will be hosting the Olympic Opening ceremonies and they need time to flip the stadium to host the swimming events. 11,200 athletes will compete in 51 sports.
  • Figure Skating: the Americans did well at their home GP. Madison Chock and Evan Bates took their 5th ice dance title, tying the Skate America record. On the women’s side, Alysa Liu also clinched first place after her free skate. On the men’s side, FRA Kevin Aymoz finally captured first place after finishing runner up many times. He got very emotional in the kiss-and-cry area. There’s only one more round in FIN then the GP Final in JPN in December.
  • Skiing: The Olympic slalom season opened up and Mikaela Shiffrin is back at it again. She won her 102nd World Cup win. She won both runs and tends to dominate here. She has won at Lapland 9xs so she has 9 reindeer.

Quick Highlights:

  • Baseball: Baseball awards were given out this past week and we have a MLB first! For the first time ever we have back-to-back winners in the AL and the NL with Shohei and Aaron Judge winning again!
  • Softball: OKC Spark and Cascade will be two new teams to join the Athletes Unlimited Softball League to round out the 6 team league in the 2026 seasons. They will join the Talons, Bandits, Blaze and Volts. The Spark is the only team tied to a city so far.
  • College Bball: Michigan St had 14 wins stripped from 2022-24 due to ineligible players.

  • NCAAW: West Virginia upset #15 Duke with only 5 players! The team had 6 players ejected after a fight in the 3Q and still managed the upset.
