Baseball: Championship Series – 1 was a sweep and the other is headed to Game 7!
Football – NCAAF: 9 losses in the Top 25 this week! Other headlines.
Football – NFL: Not a lot of close games this week. Icy Hot Bowl on TNF.
Olympic Sports: Lots of Swimming news.
Quick Headlines: NBA. Golf. F1.
Baseball – MLB:
- AL Championship Series – The Mariners won game 1 last week as our only Champ series game. They continued their domination on Monday. They started with a 3-run HR in the 1st. Then the Blue Jays put up 3 in the next 2 innings to tie it up. But the Mariners would get another 3-run HR in the 5th and a 2-run HR and a run in the 7th. They went 10 hits for 10 runs on Monday to take the 2-0 series lead. The Blue Jays were not going down that easy. On Wed back in Seattle, Springer and Guerrero hit 5 HRs to crush the Mariners 13-4.Toronto had 18 hits! That momentum continued in Game 4 and the Blue Jays would tie up the series winning this one 8-2. Game 5 was crazy. The Blue Jays were leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th and looked to have it done. However the Big Dumper got up to the plate and does what he does best, hitting a HR 348 feet to tie it up. Just when you thought we were going to extra innings, Suarez hit a grand slam to put a huge ! on the win and take the series lead. The Blue Jays, who were just 1 game away from being eliminated, came out swinging literally. They put up 2 runs in each the 2nd and 3rd They would tack on another for good measure in the 5th before the Mariners would get any. Seattle would score 2 in the 6th but that was it and suddenly we’re going to a winner-take-all Game 7!
- The Dodgers won a close Game 1 after their P Snell who is now 3-0 since coming back from injury. It was lucky that the Dodgers scored in the 6th because the Brewers got a rally going in the 9th to bring the team within 1 of tying up the game. But LA would hold on for the Game 1 win. Game 2 was Shoehei’s. No other comments about it. He had 3 HRs alone which led to a 5-1 victory. The Dodgers would score first in Game 3. Brewers would answer in the top of the 2nd but they would not have any answer when LA put up 2 in the 6th. Dodgers just 1 win away from a sweep. They would get it done on Friday 5-1. Easy sweep and move on for an upset of the team with the most wins in the league during the regular season.
Football – NCAAF:
- All of the Top 25 played this week. There were 5 ranked matchups and 4 upsets for a total of 9 losses in the top 25 this week:
- Louisville pulled some trickeration in their game and took a 14-0 lead. They would never trail 2 Miami. Helps when the cards int beck 4xs the most of his college career. It looked like Mia were going to come back and ruin the upset when they had an INT but Louisville fumbled on the next play to give them the ball back. The Canes would score on the next play. Still trailing by 3, they were driving to at least tie it up with a FG when the Cards INT for the 4th time to seal the upset.
- 9 Georgia wanted revenge for last year on 5 ole Miss. it was a tight game with 7 lead changes. But Uga outscored ole Miss 17-0 in the 4Q to comeback to win. That’s more points than the Rebels had yards in that Q. Uga never punted in this game! Dawgs won 43-35
- The other huge match up in the SEC: 6 Bama and 11 TN. Tennessee was going to score in the final 9 seconds of 1H but throws an INT and bama runs is alllll the way back to go up 23-7. Bama would never trail in this game to win 37-20. Bama breaks out the cigars.
- 7 Texas tech lost to Arizona state who got QB1 back for this game. TT rallied to take the lead 22-19 in the final 2 min but ASU only needed 90 seconds to score and hand tech their first loss 26-22.
-
- 10 LSU takes their first loss to 17 Vandy since 1990. There were no punts til 4Q then there was 3 essentially 4 straight three & outs. That’s a big win for Vandy because they were up by 10 going into the final Q. Commadores hold on to win by TD. Vandy didn’t even rush the field after this win, the ultimate snub to LSU.
- 13 Notre Dame’s ground game was too much for 20 USC. Despite almost 100 yards of penalty yards, ND got 3 turnovers all in the final 17 min of the game. Nd beats usc by 10.
-
- Newly ranked 22 Memphis lost to UAB as a 23.5 point underdog and is on an interim coach. Dragons got a goal line stand and the W 31-24.
- 15 BYU remains undefeated with a nice quality win over 23 Utah. The win prob chart changed teams 15xs. Utah would have more than 100 yards more offense but they also had 2 turnovers that both would result in BYU points. The cougs win their 3rd straight holy war.
- Minnesota crushed newly ranked 24 Nebraska. Neb wouldn’t get into the end zone only managing 2 FGs. And their QB got sacked 9xs. Gophers win 24-6.
- Other headlines from around the football universe:
- Ohio St shutout Wisconsin. The Badgers did manage a trick play on 4th & 19 from their own 20-ish. That might be the best thing to happen to the badgers all season. Ohio St wins easily.
- The Arkansas vs 4 Texas A&M game was high scoring and delayed 2 hours for rain – hope you took the over in this one. This game is always weird. There were only 4 punts all game. Both Qbs threw for 3 TDs each. Arkansas was down 10 with 3:44 to go and the Razorbacks would go 93 yards to get the TD. But they would not get the onside kick so the Aggies escape and Arkansas loses another close one.
- #8 Oregon exercised some demons against Rutgers 56-10 and it was 42-3 at half.
- Auburn took another team to OT. This time it was #16 Mizzou. Both teams would miss a FG in 1OT. Mizzou would get a TD in 2OT and Auburn would not.
- Kentucky came back on the #21 Texas Longhorns scoring 10 points in the 4Q to take the game to OT. Kentucky would go for the TD in OT on the goal line and not get it. Texas would hit the FG to escape again.
- Undefeated UNLV lost to Boise St. they were in the running for the Group of 5 teams in the running for the CFP.
- Coaching Updates: IU HC Curt Cignetti renewed at Indiana. Billy Napier fired at Florida. Florida needed a big man INT to seal the win against Miss St.
Football – NFL:
- MNF: There was a double header last week. The Falcons broke open some big plays to take the early lead in this one and win 24-14 upsetting the Bills. The Bears/Commanders game was a close one too. The Bears scored the first 13 points of the game mostly due to 2 turnovers. The Commanders would have the ball for just 5 minutes of the 1Q due to turnovers. Another fumble would crush the hopes of Washington in the final 3:10 of the game which gave CHI the ball back to score a FG to win by 1.
- TNF was deemed the Icy Hot Bowl as both QBs were in their 40s. The Steelers had back to back drives with turnovers which led to 10 points by the bengals. The bengals would nail a 36 yard FG in the final 7 seconds to win by 3.
- There were 4 close games this week:
- Jalen hurts threw for over 300 yards and 3 TDs in the eagles bounce back win over the Vikings. After two straight losses they needed this one.
- The Jets are still winless. They couldn’t get into the endozne at all during their noon game on Sunday letting the panthers win with just 13 points.
- But no game could hold a candle to the Giants/Broncos game. The Giants had just constantly put up points in every Q, leading 19-0 going into the final 15 min of football. But the Broncos said ‘hold my beer’ to that and would score 33 in the 4Q. NY still scored 13 but DEN comes all the way back to win by 1 with a FG as time expired.
- SNF: the Cardinals started well leading 13-6 at half but the Packers would come back in the 4Q putting up 2 TDs to win by 4.
- Other highlights:
- Rams crushed the Jags in London 35-7.
- The chiefs, browns, pats all scored 31 points and beat their responsive opponents by more than 2 TDs.
- The colts out scored the chargers 17-0 in the 2Q and that was enough to seal it easily, 38-24.
- The Cowboys got Ceedee Lamb back and you could tell! They went on a scoring spree in the first They would win 44-22.
Olympic Sports:
- Swim: AUS Arianne Titmus shocked the swimming world by announcing her retirement this week at the age of 25. She took the pool by storm in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics by beating Katie Ledecky in the 400m Free and then repeated in Paris in 2024. She then had surgery to remove begnign tumors on her ovaries ~8 months ago. She was expected to be one of the non-American stars in LA28. She retires with 8 Olympic medals (4 gold), 4 world titles and the current 200 Free WR holder. Don’t feel too bad for AUS though as 2 AUS women broke short-course WRs this weekend. Mollie Ocallaghan in the 200 Free and Kaylee McKeown in the 200m Back. USA Regan Smith took 2nd to McKweon in the 200 Back but broke the WR in the 100 Back earlier in the meet.
- Figure Skating: Ilia Malinin landed 5 quads in his free skate to easily win the opening Grand Prix of the season by 40 points.
Quick Highlights:
- Golf: Tiger Woods has had another back surgery (his 7th) to replace a disc.
- F1: Max Verstappen wins the Austin GP by 7 seconds.
- NBA: Russel Westbrook and the Kings strike a deal so Russell is moving to Sacramento.
