Olympic Sports: T&F Worlds.

Baseball – MLB:

  • This week’s games:
    • On Tues, the Braves and Nationals played a double header. In game 1, Braves Matt Olson hit a HR in his 4th straight game. ATL would win 6-3. In game 2, Olson hit a bases loaded triple in the 10th inning to have ATL win again 5-0. The Yankees had a 9-run lead on the Twins before that team started crawling their way back. MN would fall 1 short. Ohtani would pitch 5 hitless innings for the Dodgers before LA would let the Phillies score 9 to end up losing the game! The Blue Jays won their 6th straight game on Tues over the Rays 6-5. But then would go on a 4-game losing streak. The game on Friday was a beat down. The Royals put up 20 on them!
    • The Astros swept the Rangers ending with a 5-2 game on Wed. Dodgers P Snell struckout 12 batters, a season high and led his team to a shutout 5-0 over the Phillies.
    • Speaking of strikeouts, Yankees P Max Fried K’d 13 on the way to his 18th win of the season as NY shutouts the Orioles. The Angels took their 8th consecutive loss with a close one 6-7 to the Rockies. They would break it the next night with a 3-0 win.
    • The Mariners won 10 straight games including impressive wins like 11-2 over the Angels and 12-5 over the Royals but KC would hand them a loss before they would go on to play the Astros and sweep them.

    • In the Mariners sweep of the Astros, Cal Raleigh officially became the highest single season HR record by any Mariner with 58. Over the weekend, the bats seemed quiet. On Sunday only 1 team would get into the double digits, the Pirates 11-0 shutout over the A’s and none on Sat.
    • Guardians win streak was sitting at 10 before the Twins would ruin it for them on Sunday. MN wins 6-2.

  • Last week of regular season this week – playoffs start 9/30. Its too close in the American League with no new teams clinching beside the Blue Jays but plenty got added to the eliminated teams. Its an opposite story in the NL. The Brewers and Phillies have each clinched their division while the Dodgers and Cubs are guaranted to have a post season. The Cubs have made their first postseason sicne 2020.
    • Eliminated: NL: Braves, *Rockies, *Nationals and *Pirates / AL: Rays, A’s, Orioles and Angels *White Sox and *Twins

Football – NCAAF:

  • There were 3 losses in the top 25 this week:
    • #19 Indiana gets a scoop and score to start the scoring. And then they didn’t stop. Indiana 63-10 over 9 Illinois. First 4-0 start for IU since 1985. Most points scored against top 10 in big ten history.
    • A big showdown in the big 12 was an early game 10am local time. #17 TT and #16 Utah. Tt had to go to their Backup QB player almost the whole 2H. It was back and forth until the Red Raiders pulled away in the 4Q. 34-10.
    • #11 Oklahoma had 10 sacks against #22 Auburn. Auburn took the lead late in the 4Q for the first time in the game but then Oklahoma went down and scored. They would add a safety to add insult to injury (and cover)

  • Other headlines from around the football universe:
    • Osu was 19-3 going into the 4Q. 19-12 was final. Tulsa snapped their 10 game losing streak. Last time they beat osu was in 1998.
    • Clemson losses to Syracuse and we on the back up are qb in 3Q. Every time you thought Clemson was going to pour it on, cuse had an answer. 34-24
    • Vandy put up 70 points. That’s the most points they’ve scored since 1918.
    • Notre dame did finally get a win. It wasn’t pretty but it’s there. 56-30 over Purdue.
    • Florida/#4 Miami was sloppy in the rain. 13-7 in the 4m left when the Canes would score a TD. Final 26-7.
    • Nebraska/Michigan was a good game. Nebraska got a Hail Mary to score a TD at the end of 1H and it was close all game. Michigan wins 30-27.
    • Unlv wins for the first time in the ET
    • Memphis gets the win 32-31 over Arkansas. They trailed by 18 late.
    • TCU wins the Iron skillet and the battle of DFW.

Football – NFL:

  • MNF: There was a double header last week.
    • The Raiders never managed a TD in their game to the Chargers so needless to say they lost. It was 20-9. Easy win for LA.
    • The Bucs/Texans game was much more entertaining. The first 4 drives all ended with points to have the Bucs up 14-10 at half. No points were scored in the 4Q but a blocked punt would give HOU a FG, then a 3& out by TB and a TD put Houston in the lead. The Bucs had a win % of less than 9% in the final 1:24. But Baker Mayfield would lead the Bucs 80 yards in 2 minutes to score the go ahead TD with 6 seconds remaining to win by 1!
  • TNF: The Bills managed to keep MIA out of the endzone in the 3Q and then poured it on in the 4Q with 10 points to win by that many.

  • There were 7 close games this week:
    • The Browns scored all 13 of their points in the 4 and that was enough to put away the Packers and give them their first loss of the season. The Eagles also turned it on late in the 2H scoring 26 points after they trailed 19-7 at half. Those 26 points would give them the 33-26 win. The Bucs had their game against the Jets in the bag. NY tried to mount a comeback in the 4Q putting up 3 TDs but it was 2 points short. The Texans are now winless after they would lose 17-10 to the Jags. On the flip side, the Chargers havent lost a game despite winning a close one over the Broncos by 3. The Cardinals and 49ers wouldn’t get into the endzone until the 4Q then they both would get in once. The Cardinals tacked on a saftey but the 49ers would put up a FG as time expired to win by 1.
  • We also had a couple of blowouts: The Colts poured it on, shutting up the Titans 41-20. The Vikings didn’t need any points in the 4Q, the 48 points score prior was enough to put away the Burrow-less Bengals 48-10. The Commanders shouldve won by more but 2 TDs in garbage time made their game over the Raiders closer. It was stilll 41-24. The Panthers shutout the Falcons 30-0! 3 turnovers by ATL but still. The Seahawks scored 38 in the 1H then shut it down but they still won 44-13. The Cowboys wouldn’t score at all in the 2H to lose 14-31 to the Bears.

Olympic Sports:

  • Track Worlds: Team USA took the most medals home at any world championships and tied for the most ever in an Olympic/Worlds. 15 for the women.
    • Sydney McLaughlin levrone beats Sanya Richard’s Rosss American record in the 400 by .4 that was in semis! In the final she won and was close to the WR with a 47.78 (47.60 set back by a E GER in 1985.
    • Cardell Tinch went from cell phone salesman to world champ in the 110h in 3 yrs. He upset the favorite USA Grant Holloway who didn’t make it out of the semis. He was going for his 4-peat which had never been done.

    • Katie Moon wins 3 straight outdoor world titles in W PV. She beats fellow American Sandi Morris as they went back and forth on clearances.
    • Noah Lyle defends his 200m world title. Kungfu Kenny Bendarek gets 2nd.
    • Cole Hocker came from 12th at the bell lap to win the 5K.
    • Melissa Jefferson-Wooden completed the 100/200 double

    • The women swept the relays. Sha’Carri Richardson held off a last second surge by JAM in the 4×1. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden earned her 3rd gold of this meet. The 4×4 wasn’t even close.
    • On the men’s side, there isnt as much bad luck in the 4×1 as the Olympics. JAM droped the baton in the heats so they were not in the final. But the USA gets the baton around the track and win gold over CAN. In the 4×4, USA got infringed upon but was allowed to re-run to qualify. And they did. The final was in the rain and they had to dig deep. Unlike at the Olympics Botswana gets revenge on Rai Benjamin for the gold. First time ever being world champ in a relay. Team USA got silver over South Africa by .002.
